could this be possible with a regular winch on a jeep..or even any vehicle ever?

Actually, it's quite easily done.
The setup shown on the video was a bit overkill for a non-competition vehicle, but it's not
a big deal really.

Careful mounting of a couple of extra roller fairleads to the frame will achieve the desired effect.

Seems possible if a pebble in the road would get you stuck, but probably 9 out of ten times you need to bust out the winch you'll be in deep mud, deep water, or need to be pulled foreward. Snatch blocks ahead of your vehicle in the right places should usually offer a foreward exit.
Theory sounds right, just not very practical.
