the long part in the front is your hdd bay--
1--open and remove all screws that are securing the drive
2--gently pull the drive out note any tight spots as you pull this is what you will find to be the problems when putting it in
3-- note if it has pins (IDE) or tabs (SATA) like the memory

Okay so I ran the dell diagnostic...
at the end of the diagnostic, my screen now says
C:\>
several times and then
Bad command or filename [File: C:|AUTOEXEC.BAT Line:6]

what now?

Thanks.

Your hard drive has crashed. Always backup on usb backup drive on regular basis.

so i think that I am going to get an IDE / SATA to usb adapter
like this...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002
If it's a virus i can't corrupt my PC.
Does this look like a good idea? and best price?

its not likely a virus but if it is i would let your pc scan before opening anything (update your anti-virus first) and that is a good price its less than I payed for mine. Are you running windows XP or 7 on your laptop and on your desktop, because its tricky to open some files/ but once open they copy just like a usb drive.

as an fyi, from your posts, it seems likely your hard drive has bad sectors. while you may be able to reinstall your OS ( operating system ) windows XP. it is highly likely other sectors on the hard drive will be going bad.

It's my experience supporting laptops and desktops and servers that a hard drive replacement is in your best interests. You can purchase a hard drive fairly cheap online now and installation instructions should not be too difficult provided you still have your original media from your laptop. (hopefully it came with OS media).

Do you get any prompts on the screen when you try to boot or is it just a blank screen

just black... literally push the start button, green light slight up for a bit, then shuts itself off.

try pulling the drive out and starting the laptop without the drive you should get a POST ( power on self test) screen. that says missing boot drive. It might just be that the bad drive is not letting the system boot. If yo u still get nothing then it might have passed :dead:
