Ok, so here is the deal. I know it's silly, but bear with me.

My wife is pregnant with our first child, Gabriella. She's about 6 months now.

She insisted, in her own sweet way, that we celebrate Mother's Day because she was about to be a mother. I disagreed, but treated her anyway. It made her happy.

But here's the thing. I don't think that Father's Day should be celebrated for me. It may sound macabre, but a miscarriage, accident, etc...anything could happen up until the birth. I think of a father as one who has a living, breathing child to care for. Besides, I want Father's Day to be when I really am a father.

I didn't want to celebrate it (for me), but she did, and since it was important to her I asked her for no gifts, just a nice steak dinner. In my selfishness though, I feel that next Father's Day is somewhat lessened because of this.

So, the question is, do you celebrate Father's Day with an unborn child? Please post poll responses.

Just because your birthday's coming doesn't mean you celebrate it months early. I'm with you but it was smart not to anger and pregnant lady.

Althought I do think it is a bit early.....You are the father of the baby right? That baby is just as alive as one 3 months older than it is so I suppose a little celebration is okay

And I dont see how the next fathers day will be lessened, I bet when it comes around this wont matter in the least.

When she is old enough you can tell her how her mother was so excited she was coming that she made you celebrate fathers day a year early! 8)

Congrats on the first baby!! That's great news!

But I do have to say, you ARE a father. And your child IS living and breathing.

If it's macabre that something can happen to your child now, while it's in the womb, it's just as macabre that something can happen to your child post-womb. This is a violent, cruel world. From my perspective, that's all the more reason to celebrate every opportunity possible!

It is, however, entirely YOUR decision to celebrate Father's Day when you want to. 'Cause, well...you're the Father. It really kinda defeats the purpose of Father's Day if the manner in which the father wants to celebrate (or not celebrate) bothers someone else.

Congratulations again!

I just have to say...you avatar just about made my day. Sorry to go so off topic, but I was having a pretty lousy day. Then I popped on here for a second and...don't know why...but as soon as I saw your avatar I started cracking up. The day has gotten progressively better since then. That whole scene is in my head now...

"When is this?"
"This is now."
"When does this happen?"
"Now. This happens NOW."

Crack me up. I love that movie.

Its my favorite movie. Glad you like.

Dark Helmet: What the hell am I looking at?... When does this happen in the movie?
Colonel Sandurz: Now, You're looking at now sir...Everything that happens now is happening now.
Dark Helmet: What happened to then?
Colonel Sandurz: We passed it.
Dark Helmet:When.
Colonel Sandurz:Just now... We're at now now.
Dark Helmet: Go back to then?
Colonel Sandurz: When?
Dark Helmet: Now.
Colonel Sandurz: Now?
Dark Helmet: Now.
Colonel Sandurz:I can't
Dark Helmet: Why?
Colonel Sandurz: We missed it.
Dark Helmet: When?
Colonel Sandurz: Just now.
Dark Helmet: When will then be now?
Colonel Sandurz: Soon!
Dark Helmet: How soon?
Technician: Sir!
Dark Helmet: What?
Technician: We've identified their location!
Dark Helmet: Where?
Technician: It's the moon of Vega
Colonel Sandurz: Good work. Set a course and prepare for our arrival
Dark Helmet: When?
Technician: Nineteen hundred hours, sir!
Colonel Sandurz: By high noon tomorrow they will be our prisoners!
Dark Helmet: WHO?!?!

Are you stationed in Ft. Campbell? I just drove past you weekend before last. Flew into Nashville, rented a convertible Mustang, and drove up to my Dad's family farm outside Paducah. Actually stopped for lunch at Sonic just south of you in Clarksville.

I have to say, grabbing Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet was one of the best casting decisions ever made.

Yep, you sure did. I see that you are in VA beach. I'll be heading that way here soon to do some work.

I've got one for you.

Sandurz: Prepare for light speed.
Helmet: No, no, light speed is too slow.
Sandurz: Light speed too slow?
Helmet: Yes, we'll have to go right to...Ludicrous speed!
Sandurz:Ludicrous speed! Sir, we've never gone that fast before. I
don't think the ship can take it.
Helmet: What's the matter, Colonel Sandurz...CHICKEN?!

Or

Dark Helmet: Careful you idiot. I said across her nose, not up it!
Laser Gunner: Sorry sir. Doing my best.
Dark Helmet: Who made that man a gunner?
Major @$$h0l3: I did sir. He's my cousin.
Dark Helmet: Who is he?
Colonel Sandurz: He's an @$$h0l3 sir.
Dark Helmet: I know that!....What's his name?
Colonel Sandurz: That is his name sir, Major @$$h0l3
Dark Helmet: and his cousin?
Colonel Sandurz: He's an @$$h0l3 too sir: Gunner's mate, first class, Philip @$$h0l3
Dark Helmet: How many @$$h0l3s we got on this ship anyhow?
The Crew: YO!!!!
Dark Helmet: I knew it, I'm surrounded by @$$h0l3s
[Dark Helmet pulls his mask down]
Dark Helmet: Keep firing @$$h0l3s!!

I think it's perfectly fine for you to celebrate it. Your wife is pregnant with your child.

Now for me to celebrate it would be rediculous. I dont have any kids or a pregnant wife. :D

I have to say that you are over analyzing life waaaaaaayyyyyyy too much.

You say your wife could miscarry or it be still born. Okay, when the baby is born, it coul die the day before Father's Day or in its teens or before you croak from old age. Will you refuse to celebrate Father's Day still? You have just started the process of a life, a miracle.

Just be happy and celebrate life. Your wife is right. Celebrate life regardless if you are an official father or not. She thinks it is meaningful. Indulge her. Don't be fake though. She will spot it a mile away and bank it for later. If you are going to go around thinking of the worst that can happen all of the time........Well, I won't say it.

CONGRATS ON BEING A FATHER! You may not be the father of a baby yet, but you are the father of that miracle.

Oh, I'm not overanalyzing life, I was just polling for opinions, and to see if similar stuff has happened to anyone else. I have far more pressing matters on my mind.

I'm in the exact same boat. My wife is 6 months pregnant and I got her something for mother's day but I didn't feel right getting anything for Father's day. She insisted so she took me out to dinner. I said it was different for me because I'm not carrying the baby. She said your taking care of the baby's mother and that is part of being a good dad.

I was reading in a few baby books and things that it used to be bad luck but nowadays it's okay to celebrate it and that it's almost expected for the woman.

Ha! Now I'll have to edit my post or someone will reopen this thread in 6 months and say something like, "You're an idiot, you wrote the same thing as him."

Shoot me a PM when you head this way. There aren't any hills here, so we can't go wheeling, but we could see how many LOST jeepers want to hook up for lunch or something. Give a shout.

I love the @$$hole gunner part. Cracks me up. And when he calls Sandurz "Chicken." And I love Sandurz chicken-esque "Preeepar" reply too. What a great movie.

How about......

I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate.
What does that make us?
Absolutely nothing, which is what you are about to become.

Or....

Col. Sandurz: Lord Helmet!
Dark Helmet: What?!
Col. Sandurz: You're needed on the bridge, sir.
Dark Helmet: Knock on my door! Knock next time!
Col. Sandurz: Yes, sir.
Dark Helmet: Did you see anything?!
Col. Sandurz: No, sir! I didn't see you playing with your dolls again.

(But this is my favorite, and most oft-used quote of that movie...)

Let's get moving.
Yes, sir. Driver, prepare to move out.
What are you preparing?! You're always preparing! Just go!
