I have played the drums since I was 12. Started learning in middle school and have been banging on stuff to make music since.

I've just recently decided that I'd really like to learn to play the guitar too. I am presently trying to retrain my ear/brain so that I hear/listen-to the guitar over the drums on songs I've listened to for years. And I'm teaching myself some basic three-chord (major) transitions to play some simple stuff, but I know that won't satiate me for long.

Anyone have any tips for learning the basics and/or beyond? [/quote]

Jamorama is said to be one of the best methods to learn.

I taught myself.

Not sure what types of music you are listening to in an attempt to retrain your musical ear, but two artists (among others) whose music is guitar clean, crisp and precise would be Eric Clapton and John Mayer. Both were born to play multiple styles of music and guitars.

Thanks for the Jamorama site Crossbones, I'm going to check that out. I'm also checking out acoustic alternative and Guitar Alliance.

I did try Guitar Hero, but I realized quickly that the energy I invested in it would be better spent learning to play an actual guitar.

I'd love to learn the banjo, but that's well down the road of stringed instrument competence for me.

Get lessons! I play classical double bass, and without someone teaching me I'd be teaching myself nonsense. They're expensive from a good teacher, ~$25-50 a hour, but well worth it, as long as your teacher is a working musician/professional teacher elsewhere. If you see them applying their musical knowledge in real-world settings, you know what they are teaching you is worthy of your money. In school I get an hour lesson every week (no charge, part of my music major), but in the summer I pay to have a lesson every other week, $50 a hour.

i taught myself to play guitar and have been playing for 6 years now...i play alot other instruments...as long as you have an understanding of music...you can learn fairly easy
