I would be surprised if many of you have heard of Datil Peppers unless your from northern Florida or southern Georgia. They like a sand soil and water but don't like their feet wet all the time...sandy soil. They don't like temps. below 70 also. These are small yellow peppers that rival the habanero in heat. They were brought to Florida in the early 1700's by the Minorcans and are considered a Saint Augustine pepper. You will not find them in a seed catalog unless you are real lucky. I planted 1 plant, now in the house, and so far have gotten 88 peppers off of it. If anyone wants to try growing them I'll send you some seeds FREE! There is one guy down here that still has a house in PA and he was able to pot grow his and transplant it to his garden and it lived. One very good piece of advice. I know this from experience!! If you are handling these things WASH VERY well before using the bathroom!!! Talk about pain and discomfort! Terry |

I have had some Datil pepper hot sauces. I think that the Sauce Boss uses them IIRC. |

The only way the seeds are hot is from contacting the pepper. The University of Florida is growing them and testing them. There is no capstan in the seeds. The only way to get rid of the fire in your mouth is with milk or some other form of dairy product such as blue cheese dressing or ranch dressing. Water only spreads it around the mouth. Terry |

Oh yes, the 60's! Flower Power and Free Love and everything was mellow. Unless you were in the military, then you were the scum of the earth. "Hey solider, how do kill little children"? The answer...."You don't lead them as much and aim a little lower". The 60's were both the best of times and the rottenest of times. Just depends on your perspective I guess. Terry (off the soap box) HAPPY THANKSGIVING everyone! |

If you start them indoors then transplant them when the ground warms up they would be fine. Then you can always dig them up in the fall and move them back indoors to finish getting all the peppers. I brought mine in and have gotten 20 more peppers that way. I have it in a widow where it doesn't get any direct sun light and it's doing okay. Not great though. My neighbor still has his outside and covers it at night. We have had a couple of light frosts at night. There is a lot of info. on the web, just search on Datil Peppers. Some of the info. is way off base and some is good. Terry |
