Spring Break Road Trip

Alrightt so heres the deal... My buddys and I are planning a road trip from here (Lower Michigan) all the way to California (San Diego) for our spring break trip this yearr. We thought it would be more fun than doing what most kids at our school do ( fly to florida somewhere) and are very excited to do it. We've been Roughly planning it for a few weeks now and heres the stops were thinking of. 1) Denver 2) Four Corners 3)Las vegas 4) San diego area. As of now we believe were taking my Dads chrysler town and country for MPG. The only problem is that we are 16 and 17 year olds and we cant get hotel rooms. we were thinking about camping? being an option. We want to make our trip fool proof so that our parents will be more likely to say yes. I Just thought id get some input from you guys / suggestions on where to stop or sights to see or any other input for our trip. Thanks!

ya its hard to get a hotel, I was 19 and I went down to OK and I got rejected from 2 places b/c I wasn't 21 but I ended up finding a place that would let me rent a room, normally I just sleep in my Jeep, even when I go camping lol.

be sure to take lots of snacks for the trip and make sure the van is all ready to make the trip, fluids, tires, etc.

Check the age requirements for State Park campgrounds. Here in Indiana it's 18, 21 for cabins.

I wouldn't think age would be an issue if you have a valid credit card in your name with enough balance to cover the hotel stay. Regardless....

1). Don't look for college students in San Diego during spring break. They're all in Palm Springs.

2). Don't even think of sleeping on the beaches in SoCal.

3). You're too young for Vegas.

4). I would recommend South Padre Island, Texas. You can get more for your money and not get hassled as much as you're destined to in SoCal ( my thought's under the circumstances you've posted here).

5). Have a safe and good time.

Your parents are letting you do that trip? :shock:

Camping in Denver area in March or early April is not warm at all at night. You will need proper gear.

while in denver do the following, go to red rocks, camp at chatfeild lake, do dino alley, stop by columbine high school, go to a rockies game, you can get tickets in the rock pile for 3 or 4 bucks, on your way out of denver go up 285 and drive thru utah, try to make a trip to the arches, nothing like it in the world. its like being on mars. not kidding. on your way to vegas stop at Nevada red rocks, indian town also. thats a great trip. i did it about 8 or 9 times. have fun and bring more money that you think you need.

South Padre Island will be pretty windy on the beach. Strong enough winds that the blowing sand will sting your legs. But, it is a fun place!

Here's what I'd do: Fly to Florida or the Gulf like the other kids and stay in a hotel that your parents can book for you. A much safer trip, and you'll have a lot more fun where the water's warm. California beaches are nice, but the water temperature maxes out in the high 60s or very low 70s, and that's in the summer. In the spring you're looking at 58-60 degrees, probably. I grew up in San Diego and loved it as a place to live, but as a vacation destination, especially for someone your age, boy, there are much better places.

1) thats alright its jist a rough idea for now

2) Didnt think we would hah

3) We just wanted to drive through at night for all the lights etc... (no casinoss!)

rightt thats the problem that we have is at nightt. I do have a credit card (in my name but parents account). And i've heard the campgrounds dont let you in under a certian age, which would suckk because im not sure what else we would do for sleep. The problem is, i dont think my parents would be to hott on the idea of us just sleeping in a car. That and Hotels would rack up the pricee. :/

how many miles are you traveling round trip? what kind of MPG does the van get? are you going to eat out for all of the meals? and how many people are going?

HMMMM.........
never had a problem getting a hotel room anywhere when I was 18,even without a CC but that military ID was enough for them.

Michigan to San Diego,that's only about a 30 hour drive,just drive straight through,just more time to spend in sunny SoCal.

right right well we are 16 and one will be 17 we were thinking about driving through but im not sure my mom will let us drive through the night

The van gets around 20 MPG and we were planning on eating granola bars and things like that for breakfast and then fast food for lunch and dinner. and there will be 4 people going including me. Map quest says 2500 miles to cali from here but that includes the stops i listed

Look into private campgrounds along the way and maybe see if your parents will book you sites at them, then you would have stops along the way that mom would know where and when you are stopping. Might also try setting up some wheeling excursions with some fellow LOST members and maybe stopping short of SoCal but having a blast on the trip. But you'd have to take the KJ.
