After a near run in with a mountain lion i am looking to purchase a compact handgun for self-protection while out fishing and camping. Inorder to do this the right way i feel a conceal carry permit would be necessary. Anyone any insight as to where i can take a concealed weapon class and get certified in colorado? Im also thinking a Glock .40, like the G23C? anyone know much bout these guns? I've fired shotguns and friends pistols. |

there are alot of classes for your ccw. just look up on-line for ccw classes in Colorado, or even your best bet would be to go to the local police or sheriffs station and talk to them. They usually know the name of certified ccw instructors. |

you can carry open out in the woods in CO. However, a new rule has taken effect this year. You can no longer carry an underarm holster in the woods...something about it not being in plain sight. And when you're fishing and wading in the water that's really the best place to keep it because its out of the way and its the highest point where water shouldn't be! Ofcourse when you fall in the drink you're getting wet regardless

Carried the 9mm Glock 19 for a while. Same size. I loved the Glock 27. It was smaller yet I still shot 100's with it. I love of the stopping power of a good .40 S&W round. The trade-off of size & power is a good one in this package. |

Considering you want to get a pistol to protect against wild game you should think about a .357 or .44 Magnum. One round of 9MM can stop a human attacker even if shot in the shoulder. With an aggressive animal charging, you might only have time for one shot, make it count. |

if you go with a glock 40 , you'll probably want to get a steel spring guide and a pack of springs stock glocks in 40 nose up more than similar 45 models, with the steel guide and the right spring for whatever flavor load you tend to use you can calm the lift down really nice my glock in 40 out of the box wanted to jump about 3 inches, after the tune up it just twitches and doesn't smoke stack lighter loads even with the heavier spring you typically get more recoil with heavier springs, but thats not always the case, you simply need to match your load, too light of spring and it beats up the frame and wants to jack back, too heavy a spring and it smoke stacks or doesn't cycle it's something easily done at the range and springs are pretty cheep but at the least, replace the plastic guide rod, i don't know why glock did that.. my springfields on the other hand didn't need the tune so i think it's just a characteristic of the glock in comparison to springfield springfield XDM's are great as well! if you're doing wading and what not, wouldn't a chest harness be more effective at staying out of your arms way and remaining dry? i swapped my drop leg for a chest holster about 70% of the time and the only location issue i really had with it was if I went prone but I don't see that being a problem fishing

I've had my CPL here in Washington for years. While I have a number Glocks (19, 26, 21, 22, 33) I carry a 1911 on a daily basis. While in the woods I usually carry a .357 revolver or the Glock 21. Any Glockis a good choice. Do yourself a favor and take a defensive hand gun class. |

X2 on that. Take your local NRA First Steps class, which should get you qualified to carry concealed (at least it does here in VA). It's a much better class than any conceal-carry class you'll get at a gun store or shooting range (unless your local range offers NRA classes). *Here's a link* After that, go to Front Sight (http://www.frontsight.com/) to get some really GREAT training. |

I usually carry a Model 1911A1 (.45ACP) in the wilds. However recently a friend of mine came upon a new unusual revolver that is chambered for some sort of .44 and a .410 shotshell. I have not seen it or fired it but it sounds like a heck of an idea if you have to deal with snakes as well as animals. |

If you want something to carry concealed but with more punch than a .40, you may want to consider something in .357SIG. My SigSauer P239 is chambered in .40S&W for target shooting and home protection but, with the switch of the barrel and magazines, can be chambered in .357SIG. This allows me to chamber my pistol in something that has quite a bit more penetration to protect my loved-ones and myself against most wildlife. Against a bear however, I'm pretty much screwed. 
As far as course locations, I'm sorry, I can't offer any advise since I'm active duty military and therefore not required to take any course to get my CCW. |

That Taurus Judge is an interesting gun. It's .45 Long Colt and .410 shot. Some models can fire the 3" 410 shells too. It's not a small gun though. That sucker's got some mass to it! My buddy keeps going back and forth on whether to get one or not. I've never fired one, but I can see the theoretical advantages. I just wish a manufacturer with higher quality standards made it. As far as not being screwed if you run into a bear...get a .44 Magnum (or larger) if you're worried about that. A 44Mag projectile is still carrying more energy at 100yards than the lesser calibers do at the muzzle. If a bear is attacking, you'll only get one shot (okay, maybe two if you can get the muzzle back down) and they will most likely not be well-aimed shots. |

If all my spare change didn't go into the Jeep or other projects (marriage  ) then I would consider the .44 but since I had to get something that was pretty good at everything including being carried concealed so I went with my Sig. I'm not a big guy so I wanted something smaller, decent power, quality manufacturer, and DA/SA. I also keep a Winchester Model 94 in a scabbard in the Jeep when I go camping with the hopes  that I can stall long enough with the pistol to be able to reach the long gun (not likely).

Like you said, all around greatness. I had a .44Mag S&W Revolver that I ALWAYS carried into the woods. But I recently sold it to fund other purchases (those things fetch a tidy sum nowadays!!!  ). I have a few rifles that I've thought about putting into an in-truck scabbard like that idea of yours though. I'd love to see picts of how/where you mounted it if you have any. Not necessarily in this thread, but I'd love to see it.
