This Saturday June 6th, 2009 marks the 65th anniversary of the allied D-Day invasion at Normandy, France during World War II. Also officially known as "Operation Overlord". So I thought it was fitting to remember and honor those Dad's, Grandfather's and other's in our lives who saved the world that day.

If you care to share your families history on that day, feel free.

My Dad was with the 467th AAA AW BN (SP) Battery A of the 1st Army. He was a 50 cal (twin) Gunner on a M16 Halftrack. Documented records from both the St. Louis Records Center and Carslile Barracks report my dad's unit was scheduled to land on Omaha Beach in sector Easy Red at 8:30 am on the 6th of June, 1944, but couldn't land until 10:30 am that morning. Army files state he and the crew aboard their HalfTrack received the Bronze Star for saving the lives of Infantry Soldier's drowning in the deep surf. Dad told me, they were pulling guys up who were sinking like rocks from their backpack straps while fighting enemy machine gun pill boxes and 88's high atop the beach. Dad also said, that day he entered the doorway into Hell. Once they finally made their way through enemy defenses, Dad and what remained of his unit entered the coastline land thru E-1 Draw. And then there were the Hedgerows....

To the Greatest Generation, wherever you are... I just want to say; "Thank you".

My grandfather survived landing at Omaha as well. They truly are the greatest generation.
