I just received a copy of the newest edition (2nd edition) of the "Four-Wheeler's Bible" by Jim Allen (published July 2009). What a great book! The author (on the back cover), and the reviews I read both state this book is a must have for everyone from the novice to the hard core experienced. And making it to chapter 8 (of 9) this evening, I can see why people are saying this. I have learned so much reading this book, it has changed my views, opinions, and thoughts especially regarding current and future mods to my KJ. And this book is up to date with the latest in products, tests, and theories. ie; product example, the Aussie Locker is mentioned. I've learned why many IFS owner's are exploding their weak drivetrain front diffs for sure. I've learned about techniques that I look forward to experiencing next time out on the trail, and I now realize which products - ie; tires (regarding many factors including where I live and how often I wheel as to daily driving) that have both changed my mind about purchasing. One thing I never knew was that one manufacturer's 31x10.50-15 tire is not the same as the other guys. Meaning tire 'A' will be 30.8" tall while tire 'B' will be 30.3" tall. I also learned the pro's & con's to each alloy and steel wheels. Again, I may have changed my mind since I own a 4x4 with a weak drivetrain reputation. But don't misunderstand, the KJ actually was ranked average or above average in many categories. Did you know there is now a new gen AT tire? They're called Super All-Terrains. They're middle of the road between mudder's and what is now referred to as the ordinary AT. With that said, since some M/T's are considered positively dangerous on icy roads, and seeing as I live in a region considered severe when it relates to snow and ice, I am now thinking I will go with the Super All-Terrains as my DD tire of choice. And those of you contemplating IFS swaps to solid axles, in-depth good stuff there too. It is amazing how much info the author fit into 256 pages! I could go on and on but I'll stop here by recommending this book as a excellent read. I purchased my copy through Amazon this past week and at that time Amazon stated the book is flying off the shelves and stock was close to depletion but that more were scheduled for shipment very soon. Check the Amazon website for yourself if you want to purchase the book through them. |

Don't think so. Says Jim Allen began his career in the Army (vietnam) was a watercraft tech and the next 20 years as a ASE Master Tech. He was a off-roading instructor with LandRover, was once a freelance automotive journalist now a full-time career. He lives on a small farm in Ohio and continues to write for 4x4, truck, and automotive magazines. He wheels as much as possible these days. -- Nothing about JeepSkool. |

Off topic? and here I thought this forum was about 4x4's, maintenance & modification, and off-road techniques? Someone is mistaken? Trust me, it doesn't matter where this post ends up. But I'd like an answer why this was considered off topic. |
