Subscribing to learn. I like to take pictures but I don’t know much about photography or the jargon that goes with it. I am looking for a new camera that is of high quality in the smallest package possible for hiking, backpacking, etc.

you want a small body camera then

so D5100, D3100 (nikon)
Canon t3i, xsi, xs, t2i
sony makes good models but they are new

canon and nikon dont really have a nikon vs canon battle...their cameras are more like a one up if you will. So a nikon that is not as good as a canon, but then their is a nikon better than that canon, and so on. its all preference. I like how nikons feel compared to canon and nikons menus are easier for me to use.

I use to work for a camera store. That is 100% true the 70-300 is an f3.something at 70 and an easy 4.5 at 300. Withe converter the f-stop would have been around 5.something at 70 and 6. Something at 300.

Look at the white body 80-200 2.8 then get a 2x converter. Sure more coin but much sharper images
