Very awesome! I always watch Alaska State Troopers show on TV and man is it a beautiful state! Best wishes to you and Aaron, I think it's time to make shirts that say "In Grumpy We Trust", in honor of Aaron's quest to you in the summer

Jayme, I have friends who lived in Homer for a while. He grew up in that area, ( his nickname is 'Mo) then moved to N Ky for a bit. His wife and him moved back for 3 years to live with his mom, but due to no work for him, they ( including mom) moved back to Ky. I think his wife worked in Cantwell for a bit, I know she was 3 hours north of them and was on 3 month stints. She does biologist/ecology work, but not sure exactly what she was doing. If you want, I will get their emails and see if they will talk to you about it up there and give you some info on the areas. Just shoot me PM Be careful with those farm jobs. My sister went up there for 3 months to supposedly work on fishing boat, thought it would be a great adventure. She ended up in a cannery for 3 months 12-14 hours per day, was far from what she was told. |

Cool, sounds good. They had a big forest fire up there about 2 years ago, my friends had all the trucks packed tight, cars on the trailers ready to roll as the fire was less than a half mile from his mom's house. They were ready to book at a moments notice. Pretty scary for them, then the fire was gotten under control. I'll ask them about Cantwell. |

I worked one summer in Alaska years ago on a seine net salmon boat. I got picked for a boat in Seattle and drove the boat up to Alaska. I don't know how much it has changed, but if you want to get on a salmon boat the best way is to go to a port town that has a cannery and hang out in a bar. If you don't mind working 48 hour days you can get picked up in any bar that is frequented by the crews. Some people can't hang, and since it is four to six people on a small boat, how you get along with the rest of the crew is just as important as how hard you work. Get to know the crews, and if you aren't too crazy you will get offered a position. The cannery is a lot of hard work, and you work so many hours you can never get out of it. The boats are 48 hours on 48 hours off. Good luck and have fun. |

I’m really jealous, very jealous……… I’ve been wanting to make a trip up through Canada and into Alaska for a long time. I even bought a DVD series on RVing Canada/Alaska. |

yellocoyote wrote: Trust me, if it was feasible for me to drive there instead of fly, then I'd do it too. It's too expensive right now. That, and the amount of time that the KJ would have to just sit in Homer... I guess it's not worth it. Maybe someday we can plan a LOST excursion across Canada and into Alaska. It would probably take us three weeks, but that would be fun.

yellocoyote wrote: I'd do it! Just not this trip. Don’t worry yellocoyote, a trip of that magnitude would require a lot of planning, a lot of money, and a lot of commitment. With that being said, maybe we can have that discussion. Where on the forum would I post something like this to generate discussion and interest? |
