I’m building a garage and I need to know how big of a garage door will comfortably fit 2 jeeps. I’m thinking either a 16X8 or 18X8. I don’t know anyone nearby who has a double car garage door, so I’m hoping that one of you do and can give me feedback.

16x8 is what I have. I can get my Liberty into the garage with the roof basket installed and cb antenna (about 9 inches over the basket). Plenty of room for two cars and a nice aisle down the middle. I back my Jeep in, my wife pulls straight in. Access the drivers side from the middle aisle with plenty of room.

18x8 would be good, allow you to pull both cars straight in and get out on either side. I don't think its a common size.

Great info! Thanks! I’ll plan on one 9’X8’ door for my Dodge with foldout mirrors and one 18’X8’ for the two Jeeps. This setup will work great for now and in the future. I’ll always have a tow rig that sits most of the time, which is perfect for the single bay use. The double garage door (Jeeps) will be used more frequently for daily driving and utilitarian purposes.

According to what I read, the newer and larger sized SUVs/trucks have created a demand for the 18’ X 8’ doors. With that being said, you mainly see them on newer structures since they are way too big for most remodeled jobs.

Most standard garage door openings are only 7' tall. My Tahoe only clears the top of mine by maybe 1 1/2". I have a 7x16 double and if I could get both in it ( kids crap on my side) we could easily fit both in there. My wife and I used to park both our S10 blazers in there side by side with no problems. It was a little tight though when I parked my buddy's 78 TA in there. If I was to build one myself, I would go for a little taller and wider, but of course it costs a little more. I also have a single 7x8 on my back barn, man is it cramped even pulling a car in and out let alone backing my trailer that's just shy of 8' wide. I wished previous owner would have put in a 9' wide one.

Yeah, then imagine a lifted Jeep with taller tires, a roof rack and lights; it can get pretty tight fast. 7' tall is pushing it.

Thanks for confirming. I’m building my retirement home, so I’m willing to spend the money the first time and do it right.

The last two garages I built ( my old place and my Mom and StepFathers) I installed 9 foot high X 10 wide doors in them, comes in real handy for taller 4 wheel drives and enclosed trailers.
This place I'm at here only has a 16 X 7 and a 9 X 7 and I slide in and out with not much room to spare overhead. But I know this is not where I will end up so it doesn't matter much, it'll work for a couple of years.
I would do 18 wide and at least 8 tall on one and at least 10 wide on the other one.
garages can never be too big ( size of the garage or doors )

My plan is to install a taller door in a shop/barn. I'd like to be able to accommodate a camper and tractor. In this situation, I'd want a 14' or 15' foot tall door.

I've done a couple Liberty Renengade lifts in my garage, both had plenty of clearance to get out....the Tahoe was still taller :goink:

I was responding to Diesel's comment, stay out of it Tom..... :goink: :goink: :goink: :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL:

Being able to pull it in the garage is the only thing keeping me from more lift and 35's on the Tahoe. Well, and that I'm poor.

We live out here in the wild west where chipmunks, mice, squirrels and other rodents will eat wires and make nests in your rigs. :banghead: I’m not going to take any risks, so the garage is the first thing being built.

Thanks Gary. We'll be living in it for a few years, so I better like it. I haven't added the final square footage yet, but I think we'll have around 750 square feet of living space.

Are you pouring concrete this spring?

I don’t know, it’s all going to depend on the bank. I haven’t gotten the green light for the loan, but our loan officer said the bank could work with us if we could liquidate some of our assets. We are land/asset rich but money poor, so the bank would like to see a little more available cash instead of assets. Assets use to mean something, but now cash is king. It would really help if we could sell one more property.

But to answer your question, I would like to pour concrete sometime this summer. The sooner is better. Once the concrete is cured, it shouldn’t take long to get the garage built. I’ll be happy as long as the garage is finished before the snow flies (October).

Here's the main floor. Other than windows, this plan is fairly finalized.
