He should have brought a spare battery, or better yet, a map and compass. It does not hurt to have the bare basics for an unexpected overnight either.

I bet he has a nice rescue bill to go along with the shame of getting lost. I imagine he learned his lesson like all of us that do something stupid the first time. I wouldn't trust just a cell phone while backpacking but now a days they are a very useful devise to carry along just in case.
