Before we take off for the holiday season, I was curious if we should consider getting AAA. We travel on average 20,000 miles per year. I'm mainly interested in AAA for someone to call if I need a tow; however, there are other benefits. I'm curious what you guys/girls may think.

We have AAA and its saved us money just on tows. Never really use the other benefits.

This is what I need to find out Tom. I'll call my insurance company to see if I have free towing.

I believe AAA is worth it, especially if you are going to use all the coupons and discounts with it.
Most insurance companies will have roadside assistance for like 12$ a year, but if it is the basic package, each tow counts as a claim on your policy. When I went to renew, they said I had too many claims. I was confused because I didn't have any accidents, or anything like that. Then they told me that it counts.
So definitely make sure what they consider to be "free" or even paid for. Technically I paid for Roadside Assistance, so I didn't think it would be an issue. Apparently, I was wrong. They do have an upgraded version which allows for more benefits.

AAA gives you a limited number of miles/tows, but it is usually enough.
If you will be traveling a lot, it is worth it because they are a nationwide company and you will always be covered no matter where you are.

AAA was also very good on planning trips, sending you customized detailed maps. But now with the invention of the "internet", it's become almost useless.

I just called my insurance company and they pretty much told me the same thing that infernicus alluded to. Plus, I currently do not have roadside assistance added to my insurance plan. The insurance company recommended AAA. So I’m going to give AAA a call and see what they offer.

Okay, I called AAA and got my membership. I went with the AAA Plus. The AAA Classic only covers towing for up to 3 miles, plus they won’t tow my travel trailer. The AAA Plus will tow my travel trailer as well as the tow vehicle, plus they will cover towing up to 100 miles. Here’s the breakdown:

4 roadside services per year
AAA Classic: $52 per year for one person.
AAA Plus: $82.00 per year for one person. $127 per year for two people.
AAA Premiere: $160 per year for one person. $160 per year for two people.

Well there's a few of us that weren't around when they were building pyramids. :-)r jk

We have AAA....used it for a jump start a few years back on the KJ. It's good to have. We have used the hotel thing too.

Did you try Good Sam roadside assistance. They take care of your car and travel trailer.

No, I didn’t even consider them nor did it cross my mind. One advantage of Good Sam is that they offer RV repairs, which might come in handy. AAA is a very established company, so I thought that would be a safe bet. Here what the AAA Plus has for RV's: "Towing, extrication/winching and tire change service for RVs is available under AAA Plus® and AAA Premier® benefits. RVs include motor homes, camper vans, cab-over campers, and recreational trailers including camping trailers, fifth wheel trailers, and utility trailers carrying recreational vehicles or equipment (excludes commercial and horse trailers)."
