OK, I had this posted in a thread over on the old ez-board forum, figured it would be good to put it up in the tech section here. This is a write-up I did for locating and opening up the Factory Firewall penetration. Hope this helps anyone who needs to run wires thru the firewall and doesn't feel comfortable going thru the rubber boot around the main wiring harness. I did this to run a power wire back to the sub. Its actually VERY easy. Just be sure to seal the hole you put in the plug with RTV or something to keep out the moisture. |

I have found an easy way to getting though the fire wall. Here is a picture. It sure does beat removing the trim. I am not saying its better then yours, Just giving another option. Where I drilled, there was plenty of room for a cordless drill to get next to the engin.

I dunno, removing the trim is pretty easy... No screws, just grab and pull. I imagine that a person who doesn't want to pull trim pieces off would also not want to drill anything. |

This is very true! I actual should have said, it is really hard to get wires though the hole along with all of the other wires. I have freaking huge hands and I can not do it. I was only showing another way for people with freaky large hands. LOL |

Jeep Dawg, I have a few questions. I am trying to wire some lights and I am going to try your method. Is there any wires, hoses, etc.. behind the firewall I could be damaged when I drill? After you drill where in the interior did you run the lights? What components in the interior did you have to remove to get the switch wired? What is the best location to ground your wire? Thanks for all the help!!!

There is an identical factory penetration on the passenger side - it will be located up behind the glove compartment at the corner of the cab. Should actually be easier to get to than the drivers side one from the engine compartment. |

I used this one yesterday to wire up some auxiliary lights. I found that it is NOT NECESSARY TO DRILL (for those who are rather sqeamish about this sort of thing). Simply use a flat blade screw driver and pry the cap off. It has some sealant on it, but it will come off rather easily. Good find! Just remember to seal it back up when you are done! |

Kevin, did you ever get around to posting the pictures of the engine side? And did you check the driver side, is that little plastic that I am seeing on that other side is the same thing? It looked similar. |

Thank You Kevin, The pictures have been added to the article, and they look great, very clear view of the opening. I think if we pinch it, it can open pretty quickly. Otherwise drilling it to correct gauge would also work, as it will give extra insulation around ATV. Thanks again. |

Some people are just sticking the blade of a long flat screwdriver under the edge inside and popping it out. You could probably even put the screwdriver against it on the engine side and push the plastic plug thru - it's not like they made it impossible to get out
