Now that i have your attention.....i got this "Type 35" light that came on....nah just kidding. I did actually find a way to fix a window regulator for basically free.

Take the inside panel off your door, remove the speaker...so on...then take the regulator out but reconnect it so you can see if its working. good idea is to secure the window in the "up" position with a rubber glove.

Image

clean the plastic piece with whatever you like...i used brake parts cleaner to dissolve the grease. Do the same with the end of the wire that connects to it. super-glue them together just so it is stronger.

Image

here is the innovative step:

take some wire and push it into the springlike regulator wire so it wraps around and comes back out. now secure the wire to the plastic piece as seen in the picture below.

Image

put it all back together and have a beer or two...heck buy a case cuz you just saved yourself a lot of money

on a serious note im not sure how well this will hold up but it was worth a shot!

Did you happen to take a pic of what actually breaks?

the part that actually broke was the plastic square piece in the last picture. it is connected to the metal spring looking cable also seen in the last picture. the place where the metal connects to the plastic seems to be very weak and breaks off. the white plastic piece holds the bottom of the window and when the plastic and cable separate the plastic piece falls to the bottom with the window. whoever designed it was a complete moron!

You ain't kidding! I just replaced my rear passenger tonight, and even though it didn't take long, it was still a PITA working behind the metal skin of the door. My hands and arms are too big for that stuff lol. Oh well, good bye duct tape holding it up.

Anything non-corrosive that you could use like the wire you pictured would be good as well I think.

thanks for posting this :)

however both of my rear windows took a doo doo today

so much for having original units until 100k!!

i cant even open one of the doors, i guess when it dropped it hit the lock mechanism or the door actuator

here is just a little hint when you install the wire. it takes bit of patience to "wiggle" it around the spring looking cable. once you do that make sure the wire is really tight. if its too loose the window will not close all the way up

hey im in the middle of trying to do this as we speak on my rear driver window but i cant seem to get the whole mechanism off of where it connects to the window. and i dont wanna pry on it too hard and break the window. is there a certain way to take it off the little mettle nipple thing?

the black metal part stays on the glass. pull the silver pin seen in the third picture to the side and the plastic till come off. as for the wire breaking i would use a thicker wire. i think the one i used was a 16 gauge but dont quote me on that

Thanks and how did you get it around the cable?

All i could think of was wrap it around then thread the whole cable through the plastic sleeve.

I'm glad i at least know it can be done, price to replace such idiotically designed piece is ridiculous. Then to have it break again.

The metal housing for the spring looking cable is round inside to fit the cable. if you push the wire in on one side of the spring looking cable your wire will follow the curve of the housing, wrap around the cable and come out the other end. you might want to do it twice for more strength.

Chiro,

How has this held up long-term? My KJ is out of warranty and the stealership wants $500 to fix my driver's-side rear window. Hehhh.

What did you use to get the door panel off?

Nice write up, I just replaced mine yesterday -

When I talked to the dealer here is the scoop he gave me: (I am out of warranty)

New window regulator with new part number requires new piece of glass because it attaches differently. Anyone who has replaced it knows that it mounts via one clip to a hole in the glass at the bottom, whereas the new regulator has two clips which requires two holes in the glass.

The price I was quoted for parts was $163 for the new regulator and just over $100 for the glass, plus labor of course.

I had him give me the old part number, and he did a locate on it to other dealers in the area. I had a dealer about 45 minutes away that had one for 50 bucks.

I replaced it myself in about an hour, including teardown and cleanup.

I read the post before I started and it was a good call to leave the bolts in the motor when installing because it made it a heck of a lot easier to line up.

Great post! :D

I put a maglight inside the door and pushed the glass down so it met it, and got a screwdriver and pushed out on the nipple while i pushed down on the glass - took a few tries, but it worked

With all the broken regulators, and questions about how to fix them, I've moved this to Tech and stickied it so that it will be easier to find.

I fixed mine in a similar manner to what you did. I got some stainless wire from Michael's / Hobby Lobby. It is what they use to hang pictures with. It is very strong as well as small diameter. So far so good. But I am only at about 4 months.
