Hi guys So My liberty has been making an awful ticking noise and everywhere i have taken it they keep telling me its lifters or is sounds like a dead lifters, lazy lifers etc... So I went on "http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getLocator&siteid=52&chapter=DP3043&appSectionid=10&groupid=10014&subgroupid=62065&make=17&model=Liberty&year=2002&catalogid=1" and bought 12 new lifters now I'm going to tackle this job myself has anyone ever done this if so some tips would be nice, now i dont' have the special too in the FSM "SPECIAL TOOL 8516" but do i need it i have been watching youtube vids of people doing this job on other cars with just a screw driver back yard mechanic style . If i do need the tool i think getting it from the dealership here for a day wont be a problem as my friend is a mechanic there. Any info or tips would be nice if theres any out there Thanks Mark |

8516 is the valve spring compressor can get one for about 60 bucks, get the job done, and possibly sell the tool to a local mechanic |

I know here in Canada you can rent specialty tools from most of the major parts stores. I would assume the same would apply in the states. Check with them and see. |

Haven't done it myself but I'm fairly confident in saying you will need the special tool. The special tool is a spring compressor and without it your risking serious injury both disassembling and reassembling the valve springs as they are under load. I just checked and Autozone does rent tools so it would more than likely be in your interest to rent the tools to complete the job ![]() |

I've used a small prybar/screw driver to do it in the past, and i've also beaned myself in the face too used the correct tool on the two 3.7's i've messed with |

Yah I went down to the jeep dealership here in town , I know one of the mechanics there, got to talking with the head mechanic and he said i could borrow the tool when i need it. Whats the job like any tips? Do i soak the lifters in oil before install, and should i bleed them so they can fully depress for install Thank for the replys |
