I finally ordered a replacement CV joint from Driveshaft Parts and got it installed a couple of weeks ago. 4WD is now working as good as new. I’m not much of a mechanic, so these photos and write-up were a help. Thanks, Twack. Everything came off fairly easily and went back on without any drama, so I would rate this repair about as difficult as changing the oil.

The total repair cost me $82 (including CV joint grease and shipping) plus $14 for snap ring pliers.

I discovered a torn CV boot on my front driveshaft, at the transfer case side. Looks like I'll be doing this repair also. I would've been calling the dealership for a replacement driveshaft if it weren't for this forum, and all the info I've learned from it. Just replacing the head will save me a considerable chunk of change! THANKS TO EVERYONE HERE!!!

I'm going to be doing this soon too. I thought for sure I would have to buy the new one.

Why the difference in price?

At drive shaft parts.com, it's $70

http://www.driveshaftparts.com/cv-joint ... d_430.html

At autozone it's $171. Is there a major difference?

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/ ... 32_0_44392

Is the drive shaft head from driveshaftparts.com for the CRD Jeep?

Ok, I did mine yesterday. I have two questions.

1. Should I have used lock-tight on the bolts?

2. Did you have a problem fitting the caps over the joint? I tried to squeeze the boot side of the cap back on and it was a pain, I don't think it seated very well. I tapped it a bit with a hammer and it just flared out the sides. I'm worried that I may have wrecked it. I basically screwed it back onto the yoke with the hope that the pressure would pinch both sides on correctly.

Guess I am in this boat too!
My boot is torn, therefore, i can just replace the head.
What's the part number needed?
Going to do a bit of shopping around to try and find best price.

I am having issues, lol. Story of my life.

I can't for the life of me get the front of the driveshaft apart from the front diff.
I have all the bolts out, and banging the life out of it to loosen it. I've also tried to pry it out.

Can someone help me and tell me exactly where the front joint separates?

THANKS!!

In your pic, the left-hand (white?) mark is the diff side, everything else comes out.

Spray PB Blaster or other penetrating oil in the crack and tap with the hammer a few times. Let it sit 20 mins.

Now tap with the hammer on the driveshaft, turning and tapping (I turned the rotor as I had the tire off, but turn the tire if installed). Don't pound, just tap. It will come out.

Leeann, you are a lifesaver. That is the exact response I was looking for. Perfect advice. :P

Think it was time to change it?

It sounded like I was dragging chains behind my Jeep. I put at least 8k miles since I realized it needed to be changed.
I purchased the joint back in November '12. I tried to get it out a couple times. I was finally able to do so, and just in time for some offroading this weekend.

Excellent write up, just replaced mine this morning. If I might add something that might save someone else some trouble. Put your bolts through the caps to line them up then press the caps in place. I just pushed mine on tight and was having trouble lining the bolts up and the plate next to the transfer case came off. And in the process of trying to get it back on without taking the driveshaft back out and without getting dirt in the grease. I tore the paper gasket. So mine is now bolted up without a gasket. Does anyone know if this gasket is really necessary? Will I be losing the grease quickly? Or is it a non-issue?

Wanted to update pricing. Including shipping, I paid $57.70 for this:

I will update my end results. I appreciate this post. It is MUCH better than the service manual.

That's just for the boot kit only, not the CV Joint.

This is the part you need.

I need help guys.
I have an 02 with the rear driveshaft head issue.
I pulled the driveshaft out and began taking apart the head. Lots of junk, dirt and crud (even a piece of the ball bearing race?), came out.
The problem is the main part of the head attached to the spline.
After removing the retaining clip, the head won't come off the shaft.
I've tried tapping with a hammer, using gear pullers, etc. No luck.
I was beginning to wonder if someone welded mine on as a joke during construction.
Anyone else have this issue? The splines look intact from the end. Is it possible the head could have heated to the point it siezed?

Possibly seized on there.

Put the head into a vise since you are turfing it anyhow. Hold a similarly sized socket up to the end of the shaft where you removed the snap ring. Give it a few good raps with a metal hammer, NOT a deadblow or rubber mallet. Just don't hit it hard enough to deform the end of the shaft of course. Should pop out.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Function > Form.
I ended up having to use a Shop Press to get the center of the head off the driveshaft.

I have the new joint together, but I have a question on the caps.
Do you have to tap the edges of the caps to crimp them inward towards the shaft like the originals or are they ok just pressed on?

Thanks for the posts and photos everyone! They have helped many save money!
