2005 Liberty CRD

A few minutes after warm up I get lots of white exhaust. Engine is consuming coolant.

Looking for troubleshooting suggestions, potential source of problem & solution.

Does it still have a functional EGR system? If so, could the the EGR cooler has developed an internal leak and dumping coolant into the intake manifold.

Also could be the head gasket has developed a leak and allowing coolant to leak into the combustion chamber.

You can perform a simple head gasket leak test after engine has set overnight.

1. With the engine shut off and cold.
2. Remove the coolant tank cap located on top of the expansion tank to release any of the existing pressure that may be in the system and then fully replace the coolant tank cap.
3. Start the engine and let it idle for about 60 seconds, then shut engine off.
4. Slowly remove the coolant tank cap again and be very attentive and listen to hear if any pressure escapes from under the cap.
Even the most miniscule amount of pressure escaping when the cap is cracked open would highly indicate a HG leak.

Could be:

Leaking egr cooler
Blown head gasket
Cracked head

In my case, it was a cracked head.
Although the egr cooler was leaking also.

Thank you everyone for the helpful tips.

EGR replacement disconnected from Intake manifold with replacement, straigh-thru elbow between intercooler and intake manifold. So no EG dumping directly into intake manifold. EGR cooler still in place with coolant hoses. Stage 1 EGR delete. I did head gasket leak test recommended by WWDiesel - no hissing heard but observed momentary bubbling into coolant reservoir - so indicates head gasket leak.

Vehicle has 205k Km / 123k miles. Timing belt, water pump, ilder, tensioner replaced at 140k km / 84k miles. So i guess I'm in for a head gasket job - hopefullhead not cracked. Threaded end of glow plug #3 needs to be machined out of head too. Will consider replacing lifters too.

:)
PS my third Liberty, one gasser, two diesels - it's a fabulous vehicle

Don't forget replacing exhaust valves and I wouldn't consider replacing rockers I would do it. I do realize the cosmetic matters though.
