Is 210 done yet? Since I'm not down with all the contruction down there I thought I'd ask, so what's the best way right now if you were coming from Magic Mountain? Thanks Just two more days of work! |

no Nanette its still not opened all the way yet...but its easy to get there off the 210...stay on the 210 to the 15..then take the 15 north to the 215 south...its only about 6 miles till you hit the 215 south. Stay on 215 south until you hit the 30 and go east..I think it says mountain resorts..just stay on 30 til you hit the 330 and go up the mountain to Big Bear...it might seem a little longer but its all freeway...no gettin off and taking surface streets..if you have any problems give me a call...Nicole and I will be up there thur night...see ya...Wally |

Nanette. We've found the Apple Valley route, Hwy 18, to be faster than chancing the LA traffic. |

The least amount of hills would be best since we'll have the trailer too. I'll have to grab a map and look into 18. Then again, there's an In N Out and a Claim Jumper by MMtn. |

Most of the hill climbing on 18 is that last few miles into BB. The route out of SBerdoo is definitely more uphill. PLus you trade Tejon Pass/Grapevine for Tehachapi Pass; a better trade. |

You're going to the same height - 6700 feet, so theoretically the hill climbing is the same. However, the Lucerne Valley approach up SH 18 is MUCH steeper. I don't recall the exact number but think it's around 16% in several places (that's unusually steep). There are three hairpin turns so forget about keeping your speed up. I'm in low in those places without pulling anything but my usual weight of a lot of gear. I guess you could do the haul, but you'll really know you're climbing a hill and may be literally crawling at times. Plus you may have to pull over occasionally to let others get by and then work on getting started again. The other routes are more gently graded, especially 330. I'm guessing that's only 6% at its steepest. I'll be using 18 going up driving the motor home pulling the Liberty but know I'll have a difficult time of it. |

You can't get here from there! But if you were to try, what you said is the shortest and maybe the fastest too. Just so you'll know, though, that's not the only way. Is Skubie a good mountain driver? |

THere are 3 ways up the mountain. The 18, The 30/330, and the 38. Of course there are a couple of trails that can get up there as well. Due to recent fires, the 38 may have more "fire control" traffic on it. The 38 has a few steep areas, but mostly longer, straighter areas. Also, the 38 goes through Higland (residential, traffic lights, stop signs, but it does not last long) The 330 is probably the curviest, but more direct. If you're coming from the high desert (Apple Valley) the 18 is the best route. From LA, you can choose the 330, 38, or the 18. It also depends on when (what time and day) you are driving. Any of these will be crowded on Friday after 1:00 PM. The best thing to do is jump on a Cal Trans page or a Big Bear page to get local traffic report on the day you are driving. As for me, I will be driving up EARLY Sat morning from Orange County. If anyone would liek to meet along the way and van-pool, let me know. My plan right now is to leave Lake Forest at 5:30 ish. Take the 91 to the 215 to the 10 E. I will check the road report to see if the 38 is clear. I prefer that route. But if folks want to meet, I will glaldy take the 330 as well. See everyone on Saturday! |

You may have some slight delays on 38 due to construction. Supposedly max 10 minutes. |

I found this, maybe it will help. It has a rough map to give you an idea. You will need to scroll down and then you can click on the road # and it will pop-up the road condition http://www.bigbear.us/weather.html |
