If anyone is interested, we (two families) are planning a sightseeing trip down to Agua Caliente (it opens 9/1) and Fish Creek (mild trail). We'll be exploring the footprints, fossil hills and other interesting sites on that trail. Camping will be at Agua Caliente hot springs campground on 9/1, and if weather permitted, somewhere on Fish Creek trail for 9/2.

Anza Borrego desert, San Diego. Take the 78 freeway to S-2 (to go to Agua Caliente springs), back up the S-2 and continue on 78 to "My Desert Rose" restaurant for turnout into Fish Creek Wash.

Come one down :) Can't guarantee I'll make a good tour guide, though.

The campground at Agua Caliente springs looks nice, from pictures that are available.

The campground has online reservation from which you can click on the campsites and see the pictures. We have campsites 30 and 31, by the indoor Therapy pool.

Your guess is as good as mine for the 'campground' inside Anza Borrego :)

Sounds fun, but the river is calling my name. It does look interesting there. Almost like a RV resort.

it's going to be so hot out there! november would be much nicer (i would be up for a november trip). it's only 90 minutes from our house but i've been to Anza in May and it was pretty hot and feel no need to go back when it's hot. it'll be about 100 when you're there and there's hardly any shade.

"hardly any shade"

That's when it's time for the good old "tie a tarp in between the Jeeps" trick!

I took the family camping in that area two weekends ago and ended up camping at the campground at the end of Split Mountain Road. It was pretty hot at about 105 degrees. We went through lots of water and made it a point to stay in the shade. The KFC we picked up for dinner seemed like a good idea in Ramona, but we soon discovered that 105 degree heat and warm fried chicken doesn’t mix.

That night it supposedly got down to 73 degrees, but the ground retained so much heat that our air-mattress was effectively an oven. There was, however, a nice breeze that lasted pretty much the whole night. We sat up-wind from the campfire and watched the sky for shooting stars. We saw about 10 really good ones.

The next morning, we made it a point to get up early to pack up before sunrise. We hit the trail by about 7am and headed west on Fish Creek. We proceeded to drive up Diablo Drop-off (the wrong way according to the map) and out to the S2.

The next time I camp in that kind of heat I’m going to (a) bring more water just incase, (b) bring COLD food to eat and (c) sleep outside of the tent on a cot. Have fun on your trip… despite the heat, we all enjoyed our trip.

Thanks for the heads-up :)

We hope it'd be cooler around that time, but if not, we're flexible. Nothing is worth risking the well-being of your family members and friends, so we definitely won't push it.
