Hi guys, I know I haven't been around for a LONG time - this might already have been posted by somebody else. But I thought I 'd stop by and see what's up. Time seems to be going so fast. All the tranny problems are behind me, my Liberty is running great and I hope to meet up soon. This was posted on the Big Bear radio station, KBHR (Kbear) web site:

OHV Seeks Support
If you're one of the four million Americans who enjoy off-highway vehicle activity as recreation on our public lands, the San Bernardino National Forest Association is asking for you help. Their OHV Volunteer Patrol Program is being threatened by budget cuts, and they have until April 15 to raise $50,000. This nationally recognized program has 300 volunteers who patrol over 92,000 miles of trails, pick up several tons of trash and educate the public about responsible recreation. To make a donation, call 909-382-2872.

Hi Karen, a couple of us were just wondering about you the other day. Glad to see you're still around.

Maybe we could pass the hat and get an official west donation?

Yes, I'm still an active member of the San Bernardino National Forest Association, which is a 501c3 non-profit. For several years they were able to get a $50K grant from the state from green sticker funds; this year they didn't get it. That money goes principally to pay for an employed coordinator, as I understand it, but the association hasn't been forthcoming when it comes to providing info about finances.

The work the volunteers do is tremendous; the organization is good and the members are great. While not having a fully informed picture, I'm not sure that a paid employee is really necessary. Many of us donate a great deal of our time and resources (gas and vehicle use, e.g.) for this cause and I don't think the organization would collapse if the funding wasn't there. Or maybe it would continue in another form.

I'm not saying that a donation wouldn't be a good thing, just that personally I need to understand just what the money is for and is it really necessary.

Well, Ted let us know if it would be a good idea for us to "pass the hat".

I'll watch the board and try and catch up for a run as soon as you guys get back from Moab - sorry I can't make it this year, hopefully next year though!

Looking forward to Big Bear too!

I thought I'd already given my views, but maybe wasn't clear enough. I'm not donating because I don't know how funds are to be used. Many of the other volunteers are donating, though, several giving $100 and at least one even more. I think it should be a personal decision, which is what passing the hat is, come to think of it, so long as there's no stigma if someone doesn't give.
