Hi Wally and all: I'm good with that. Rather than going to Denny's, can I meet you on your way to the trail? Like on the corner of Roundup (the continuation of Rock Springs Road) and Central at about 8:20 or so? CB channel 20? I forgot your ham call sign, but how about 145.535 for frequency? I'm KG6AIT. Doing Pontiac is a great idea since it may be closed in the future according to the present plan. Doug: just so's you'll know, these are both difficult trails. |

If I'm lucky enough to get the day off I'll be sure to be there. If Roys LJ is done by then it'll be a great test run |

Greg Hoffman (SBNF OHV Coordinator) explained the situation at the AAT meeting last month. 1. The whole area south of 2N61Y, including the abandoned Pontiac and all of Heartbreak Ridge have been zoned as "RW" (Recommended Wilderness) during the 2005 Land and Resource Management Plan (aka Forest Plan) process. The appeal period for the Forest Plan ended in July 2006, so we are stuck with the "RW" zoning for the area until the next plan (10-15 years). 2. According the the Forest Service, The Congress has reserved the authority to make final decisions on Wilderness designation. In the interim, the plan directs that Wilderness characteristics be protected in the areas until Congress takes final action. In other words, the Forest Service treats the "RW" zoning as though it already has been designated as Wilderness. 3. Since the area is being "treated as Wilderness", that trail is designated for hikers only; it is not designated for motorized vehicles (even mountain bicycles are prohibited). Although there is no gate across the trail, I noticed that there are no trail markers either, because it is not an authorized route. 4. There are existing regulations that prohibit motorized vehicle use in the SBNF except on designated trails. 5. Bottom line, this is not a "designated trail" for motorized use because of the "RW" zoning. You could be cited by the Forest Service for operating a motor vehicle on that trail. Here is a link to the Region 5 FAQ about the Forest Plans; look at items 14-18 http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/scfpr/projects/ ... m#fourteen 6. While we are on the subject, the Gold Mountain Rock Garden is zoned "BCNM" (Back Country Non-Motorized). While not as restrictive as "RW", it has the same effect because it removes that portion of the trail from the designated route system. Posted today by a MJR member. |

Yeah, I heard all that but my take was different, probably wrong. I thought that since there were a lot of appeals filed the decision wasn't yet final, though a good outcome was not likely. Oh, well, as you say, we can check it out and do an alternate if it's verboten. Maybe the public land Nazis have won again by intimidation and law suits. |

High Desert CB shop in Hesperia will give you a discount if you mention our club. Plus they will "peak and tune " your radio so you get the MOST out of it. It cost me about 35 bucks for them to do everything. They also sell radios. mounts and antenna of all kinds. Great guys... Good luck |

I think they are worth the trip too. I was amazed at the range my little Cobra 76 had while in Moab. I was talking to Matt while he was toward the end of Hells revenge and we were on Fins & Things. Only one other person in our group could hear Matt but I don't think Matt could hear them. I'm sure the complete hookup from them (CB, antenna, install, etc.) won't be cheap but it will be done right and work great when finished. 8853 Three Flags Ave Unit D-3 Hesperia, Ca. 92344 760-947-9917 |

I'm going to try and make this one. I really like this trail, and with everyone and their brother at HDR, the mountain should be empty. This is the same trail we did for the Hangover crawl, right? |

Cool, I'll definatly stop there after I drop off the dog. I was thinking about doing the install and wiring myself then maybe having them tune it afterwards. I'll probably ask them what it'd cost first and see. I was thinking about getting a little midland 4001Z and putting it in the spot where the ash tray would be. Since I only have street parking I have to remove my CB and antenna anyhow (would rather forget it to a trip then have someone bust my windows out to steal it). http://www.midlandradio.com/comersus/st ... oduct=4334 Justin |

I think the CB Store is closed on Mondays, Open Tues - Sat. Sorry. They are good, though, they did my radio and several others in our group with great results. |

I had my radio and antenna installed in the Jeep prior to going to the CB shop. They removed the radio from the Jeep, worked on it inside the shop and re-installed the radio. They then tuned the antenna to match. My CB works WAY better than a perfectly tuned "stock" CB does because of their "tweaking" That all cost under 50 bucks (I think it was 35..but it's been along time ago) |
