Post subject:  MAY 24th! JOHNSON VALLEY OHV! BE THERE!

We are going to do a tour of the Johnson Valley OHV area on May 24th.
Our tour guide will be Mike K. from the Bear Valley 4 Wheelers club. (Great guy, several of us have wheeled w/ him before)

I rate this run as moderate, with the sand dunes posing the most challenge decause of the deep sand. We start at Camp Rock Rd. at Cougar Buttes, run the ridge over to soggy dry lake the on over to means dry lake to the Hammers trail head then a large loop northward back around to Camp Rock Rd. to Hwy 247.

Highlights are:
Hugh granite rocks at Cougar Buttes
Cross 3-4 dry lakes.
Check out the Hammer trails. (on foot)
Large sand dunes
Indian petroglyphs
Cinder cone mine. (active)
Old windmill and water trough
Maybe an old mine site or two

This usually takes all day to do.

We are not doing the actual Hammer trails, just checking them out unless you want to play of course. As mentioned above, this is a moderate run so you will need a lift, rock rails, recovery points, recovery gear, sense of humor, big smile, and be ready for Fun! I don't expect a lot of rock crawling but there will probably be enough to make it fun.

Not to be the gloom and doom.....but that's not going to be a tour.....that's going to be a circus!!!! Johnson Valley over Memorial Day weekend, that's down right scarey.
But I do have it on the calendar :)

The eastern boundary is shared with the Twenty-nine Palms Marine Air-Ground Combat Center. DO NOT enter this area.

Yeah, that's would put a damper on the day wouldn't it?

Better see it now in case the Marines decide they need it more than we do and take it away from us. :?

While trying to screw my tranny skid back on, I killed two nutzerts. Now I have to drill through the crossmember. Anyone have a recommendation on what type of bolts to use?

Otherwise, I'm ready to go :D

I use carriage bolts so the head is rounded and can't snag on stuff. Drag it over this week and we can get you fixed up, I am sure I have some bolts long enough.

I wish it was closer to my house or we would make the drive up there. Its 2 hours and 45 minutes according to MapQuest...too long for one day.

Have fun on this trip!!

Sorry but can't make this event. I havn't had the time to change my steering rack and don't want to break down while wheeling. I have all the parts just need the time. I'm shooting for BB on May 31st. Have fun and be safe.

Nolan, while you are capable w/ a set of hand tools  , hit up TJKJ2002 for info on how he did the job Really fast in Moab. He knows some short cuts that will save you a bunch of time. (unless you already know them)

We will miss you on the trail!!

Well, we really need to get back out to the JV area in the future. It is a huge area to explore and looking at the areas that Mike wanted to take us looks like it would be a lot of fun and cool areas to explore. Since we only had 3 well set up rigs we ran a different, more difficult area (which would be great fun in a KJ for sure)
See the trip report for where we ended up for pics and info. Sorry some couldn't make it and hope to see more at the next event.
