Hey folks!
We need to get our keesters back up to work on our adopt-a trail on July 19th.

We will be working on a trail mainteneance plan and we need to work on some sections that the forest service wants to make permanent, Legal sections of the trail (currently not recognized as legal) so that could be cool.

Anyhow, Please post up here if you can commit to being there on July 19th.

We will meet at the McDonalds at the 15/138 Junction at 0800, Leaving McD's at 0830 Sharp Please. It would be best to get going early so we can beat some of the heat.
McD's info:
3230 WAGON TRAIN RD
PHELAN, CA 92371

Please bring a shovel if you have one, loppers, saw, etc. if you can. Water, food, gloves, boots, sunscreen, etc. suggested. we will also be discussing an upcoming event/run w/ group camping so be there!
Thanks!! :D

Hey LOST JEEPERS!! I got a cool message from Greg H. of the US Forest Rangers regarding our upcoming adopt-a-trail run:

"John, We can make this a good day! We can work on some trash collection in the morning near the lake. Shortly after that we can head up the mountain on 2N33. Look at excessive erosion sights offering viable solutions. Also, identify corners that have become blind and dangerous due to overgrown brush. I have gas powered hedgers and chainsaws that will make quick work of this (I'll be there for this).

Next, the fun part. Driving the off shoots of Pilot Rock Ridge. While we do all of this work, we'll be writing a road maintenance plan for future projects that anyone from the club can return and work on (or I can can do with employees and/or our dozer and/or front loader). This will be the first hand analysis of each off shoot for setting the difficulty levels (green, blue or black), drainage problems, overgrown brush and any potentially dangerous areas that need to be addressed.

The key to all of this? Build a good relationship between the club and the USFS. More importantly, become part of a large team of off-roaders (over 2,600) that can respond to emergency road projects (after floods, fires, or just reopening a road in a flash!).
It's a really good Program and was recently noted by Congress as the best in the United States!

Please pass on that most of the costs associated with volunteer work are tax deductible. Also, we offer free training for First Aid/CPR, road and trail construction design techniques, Map, compass and GPS (both beginner and advanced, equipment operator certification, low cost Ham certifications, Incident Command training and LOTS more!

We have a cabin in Lake Arrowhead your volunteers can use if they volunteer and an assortment of Group Camps I can reserve for your club across the entire San Bernardino National Forest including the San Jacintos and Santa Rosa's for free!!!

After 28 years with the agency, I am still VERY EXCITED to get people involved and reward them for everything they do as volunteers. I respect every volunteer and strongly encourage them to get involved and make comments to make our program stronger, more fun and better for all that are members of the SBNF AAT Program.

I apologize if I belabored this e-mail. Today is my day off, but, I'm so inspired I can't help but share what we have with you and your fine 4x4 club.
Take care John,
Greg."

What I would especially like to point out is the mention of building a relationship w/ the USFS; the tax deductibility of costs associated w/ such work; the availability of free training in some cool stuff; and possible use of a group camp or cabin for our club!!!

PLEASE consider attending our next couple of outings so we can help out where needed on OUR trail. I will be looking into use of the group camp for an event for later this year.

PLMK if you have any questions or comments on this info. We will post up some more detailed info in the coming weeks on meeting times, location, etc.
Thanks, John

Hey JJ... All that sounds great. Did we ever find out where we can legally dispose of all the trash we collect?

Other than the dumpsters at the park I don't know but we will talk that over w/ Greg that day for sure. We have a lot to discuss with him on our trail plan and the improvements that we can make. This trip should give us some answers and help us to see the bigger picture. I'm looking forward to it. :D

BTW, I would like to make a motion that we do something cool for those that show up a couple times to help. Not sure what yet, but we will come up w/ something.

I'll do my best to be there. (I still have your saw from the last trip, JJ)

What about a Lost Jeeps West Trail Maintenance Crew T-Shirt?

Greg will take the trash once it's collected. I found that a garden rake works great besides a shovel. Also JJ, Greg requested that you bring one of our club logo's with you on that day. That way we'll plant the metal adopt-a-trail sign with our logo on it on our trail. Making the adoption official. :)

Hey everyone.

I just got home from a AAT meeting, and WOW was I impressed. Very organized, very out going, and very enthusiastic about helping to preserve the forest for all of us to use. It's not just a bunch of people out picking up trash, well they do that too, but it's dealing more with the politics and legal issues to keep our forest open, not only to 4x4's but to ATVer's, and hikers, making sure you don't run into a locked gate during your visit. And if you do, they find out why this gate is locked and what can be done to unlock it. Basically this is a great organization that I personally plan on getting more involved with, and I hope more people in our club will too.

I will post some notes from the meeting soon.

Very cool! Thanks for attending Burchie! I wish I lived closer to the happenings so I could attend. Seems we don't have that sort of thing out here in the desert. (or at least not that I am aware of)
