Here's a link to the volunteer organization that helps the BLM operate Red Rock Canyon NCA.

If you are on the northern end of Las Vegas Blvd will want to take I-15 to 95 North towards Reno, exit on Summerlin Parkway, exit on Rampart and head south, turn right on Charleston Blvd. and head west. There are signs for Red Rock once you get past the 215.

Rather than exiting at Rampart, continue on the Summerlin Parkway all the way out to the 215. Turn left (south) and exit at Charleston.

The last gas station is in a shopping center on the north side of Charleston a bit west of the 215. (Expert local's hint: Cheapest gas in town is currently at the intersection of Charleston and Jones. Might be worth the crosstown traffic from the Strip to save 20 cents a gallon.)

Looking at Google Earth the first section looks to have a lot of winding roads (thinking of time, not that I care how long it takes since I will be around till Sun). Looks pretty nice with the mountains around it. Looking forward to it.

I ran both trails one day and it took me about 6 hours total from start to finish. I figured it will take another hour with a group (am I underestimating here?). You make a good point about the permit and the rangers not taking kindly to groups. I will call the BLM in the morning to find out the scoop on that. We can always run it the other way. That puts the end of the trail about 12 miles from the restaurant :)

Andy, Thanks for the info but......... We are less than a week away from our run date, drastically changing plans now is not a good idea. :?

You are welcome to run whatever you want but I would like to see our group stick to the current plan of running where we already planned.

Running it a different direction is fine if that is what is deemed necessary.

I would like to see the run stay as planned. We have worked this plan for months now and have a leader in place. We do not need more leadership on this run.

Kirk, Can you please check into the group issues and LMK if we need a permit? The club can come up w/ funds for that if need be. PLMK ASAP what it is going to take. (i'll see what I can come up w/ too)

Do we have a good count of who all is going? At least how many rigs? Are any of the Vegas folks who started posting up here in the last couple of days going to be attending?

I think we need a revised head/vehicle count. I have lost track now

PLEASE NOTE:

The dinner deal cutoff was a week ago and we have a full room. I have included those that mentioned to me via PM or email that they might make it, you know who you are.

We can't add last minute additions to this so please understand.

Thanks!

Since we have concerns about the BLM frowning upon unregistered groups in Red Rock, we have decided that it would be best to run the trail/s from the opposite direction as originally posted. Sorry for the last minute change  but I think its for the best. Here are the details. . .

Meeting time: 10am
Meeting place: The end of Cold Creek Road (location details below)
CB Channel: 25

For those staying in the Summerlin area; take the Summerln Parkway to US95 north
For those on the strip; Take I-15 to US95 north
Cold Creek Road runs between two penal institutions (and just to get it out of the way, I said penal and not penile    ). If you get to Indian Springs, you have gone too far. The road winds in for several miles and there are residences on the first part of Wheeler Road so we will meet up before we get there so that we disturb the residents as little as possible.

There are a couple of gas stations before you get to Kyle Canyon Rd if you need to stop on your way out. If needs be, we can get gas in Pahrump once we are over Wheeler Pass and headed to Mountain Springs Recreation Area.

There is a turn off near some old charcoal kilns that would be a nice spot to stop for lunch.

The rest of the details should be the same. Let me know if there are questions!

I will have an answer for you tomorrow. Looks like I should be able to make it for the first part through wheelers. Will post again tomorrow or Wed :) If that is too late just let me know. I was hoping to get out to wheelers this weekend to check on my cache and to hit a christmas cache up there.
