I'm on the fence for this one, I will know more in the next few days. Ed, I know you said the trail was narrow in some spots, but could I get my adventure trailer through? Mario did it right?

No problem Wally. Trail is fine. Might be tight if you had a Suburban or something that size. We took a full size, older Land Cruser up there.

That was Burchie, who said it's narrow. I've never been there.
I do know that Mario got his through.

Now get off that fence before you hurt yourself and join in. :D

Independence would be closer, and if I remember right, it was a good size town. That's where Big Jim's lower ball joint went out.

I'm going to blow out of Corona about 5am. But then I'm not taking any kids.

Yeah, I thought about Independence, but I'm spending Best Western points and there isn't one there. Plus I didn't want to drive farther north than I had to. We'll still be fine coming from Ridgecrest. Just want to get through the Cajon Pass and past the Victorville traffic.

Cool! I GPS'd the drive into Papoose (actually this track goes all the way to Badger Flat where you pick up Mazourka Canyon Rd). That is steep! (The first 5 miles anyway). Bigger pic is here: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2572/3949917404_c81c8d0f2d_o.jpg

Let's get together one day next week to go over maps and GPS stuff. Let me know what your work schedule looks like.

I'm a definite maybe, depending on some other things, and if my coming won't spoil it for someone else, not counting Ed or Burchie. The week before I should be able to firm it up and maybe everyone can take a CPR class by then.

That was a great trip a few years ago; nice in the day and COLD at night. We were over 10k feet up, right? Wish the trip was a bit longer, but a 2 day trip is better than no trip, as Tim Leary would say.

How to get there? You're asking a decrepit senior citizen? Well, remember we headed West from Death Valley, so that's not helpful, and I think we exited by Mazourka Canyon, which Ed intends to use as our exit again. But I'll also do some digging to clarify the route and exact entrance and exit points. As far as Papoose Flats is concerned, I'll know it when I see it, like pornography. Others will have to look for small Indian children that were run over by a steamroller.

Here's what I found on my DeLorme Topo map. Of course, your mileage and route may vary.

Go East on Death Valley Road from Big Pine about 18 miles to N 37 7.36; W 118 4.68; should be close to a junction with (multiple names listed) FR 9S15 (maybe 9S18) Waucoba Road, or Hines Road. Anyway, it's the only right and should be dirt. Follow 9S15 when there's a fork to 9S14, continue to Papoose Flat at N 37 2.01; W 118 6.84.

Nest day, continue on 9S15 about 3 mi. then right on 11S01. Go right about 1.5 mi. towards Badger Flat, then 13S05 South. That becomes Mazourka Canyon Road. At lower elevations you should be able to see your way through Kearsarge to Hwy 395 or take one of the local roads South and intersect with 395 later.

If I can come, I'll bring my DeLorme GPS wihich will have all this info.

Interestingly, the Bristlecones Pines road goes off to the left not far from where you'd be turning right for Papoose Flat. If you haven't been there, it's a great trip too, and there's a campground by a stream with an outhouse nearby. Maybe some other time.

Yeah, I was looking at the Bristlecone Pines thing and wishing we had time for both. Ted, what DeLorme GPS do you have? I've got the PN-40SE. Aren't they great? Oh, and Burchie, the route Ted describes is the same one I mapped in the pics earlier (the route pictured starts at the Hines Road turnoff and ends at Badger Flat).

Can't wait to get up there!

I've got the older PN 20 and Topo 7, but it works well and I've used it a lot. You've got the new, improved model - I'd sure like to see it! And you've probably also got the Topo 8. Don't know if there are any improvements to that but there must be some or they wouldn't have updated it.

Yeah, I sure hope so too, Ed! And I hope you've got some wheels under that Jeep now instead of those unattractive spider legs.

Yeah, I had the PN-20 and really liked it but it was painfully slow sometimes. PN-40 is lightning fast in comparison. I started with DeLorme way back with Topo 3. The main difference between Topo 7 and Topo 8, other than newer maps, is that you can download the aerial imagery already precut for the PN. So saves time cutting maps later (but slightly longer to download it initially). In theory it's a good idea but I'm still doing it the old way.

Just an update... I talked to Ed today, and this is still a go. Going to be cold.
