ARRR. Shiver me timbers, whatever they are. HAH! Bet you thought this was going to be a tale about a lying pirate on a shake down cruise.

But nooo. It's about a group of LOST KJs on the John Bull Trail following the Adopt A Trail run on Sunday, May 21st. After lunch at Rock Camp, the group discussed what trail to run. Doug wanted to to John Bull and the rest of the gang went along with that. JJ and Gabe decided to go home to get other things done.

Annette, Burchie, Nolan, Will, Doug and I (Ted) went on up through Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs, Fawnskin and Big Bear City to 3N16 where access to the trail begins. At the base we stopped while some looked at the seemingly impossible rocks we had to climb over and around. As we encountered some obstacles, we found that four of the vehicles were fairly well set up but two weren't: Doug's Liberty had open differentials and Will's had only a limited slip in the rear. I had assumed everyone understood that this is probably the most difficult trail on the hill, and you know what happens when you assume something. Big DUH on my part, but I may not make that assumption too many more times, ten or twenty at most.

So as we reached the more difficult obstacles, many attempts and much rock placing was the order of the day, along with spotting. The Hard Rock Award goes to Nolan, who always jumped right in and started throwing them. Some strapping was also needed and that helped Doug until his "tow points" blew off. Fortunately, no further strapping was absolutely required by him from that point. When we got to the top of the hill after much work, someone asked if that was all the rocks. I explained that we had gotten by the most difficult ones but there were still a lot going down. Speaking of which, I got high centered on one by the two trees due to sliding off my line, but a little winching got me clear. Everyone else made it by two trees without incident. They'd go to any extreme to make me look bad, but in this case it was easy.

The Driver of the Day Award goes to Annette; I don't think anything really gave her any pause, literally and figuratively. A close second for Nolan, chugging quietly through as though we were on a graded trail. Way to go, you guys, and everyone else too.

Little by little we made our way down the rest of the trail and on out, completing the 5 mile section in 5 hours. Certainly not a record, but considering that some vehicles were limited, not bad! Especially since no one in the group (except me) had ever run it before. Burchie had gone last year as a passenger, but it's very different driving than riding, right Burchie? And the really good part is that only a very minor amount of body damage was sustained by Will and Doug AND NO ONE HAD ANY MECHANICAL DAMAGE!

This run definitely proved that the trail is ready for our Big Bear run.

AY-AY Capt. Ted Sir. That was a most excellent run. And thank you for the award and kind words.:) There was a couple spots where Sam and I got hung up, but with some manuvering and good spoting we were able to work our way out. It was more of a clearance issue that will be corrected next month.
I knew it was one of the hardest trails on the mountain, but you really have no idea til you do it. Needless to say I was beat by the time we were done.
And like Capt. Ted said, everyone did great and I'm pretty sure we all had a good time. I know I did....anytime you can go out wheelin it's a good day!

Yes, please post your pics from this run. I think Doug, Will and Nolan got some, maybe more. Let's get this out of the "worthless" category.

Well what a day what a day, I for one missed the comment that this was one of the hardest trails. Until somewhere in the middle of the run.

But it was still a great time and a big thanks to Nolan, I volunteered to be the first person he was able to strap around, a couple of times.

Unfortunately I didn't get to many pics but got some, so here they are:

Make it?! Haha! Been there, done that Many times now in two different Jeeps.
But Yes I do wish I could have been there!! However, I knew it was going to take several more hours and I couldn't swing that much time. I did have things I needed to get done at home before the weekend ended.
Having a kid in baseball makes for busy weekends and not much time to get caught up. UGH!

:D BTW, Glad you got to experience it before moving away. Now you will be spoiled for sure!

Wow what a day thanks Ted for your comments. Took us awhile to finish the trail but I had fun and learn a few things about our KJ's. Everyone did good and helped each other we made it with no major damage. That was the first time for me on John Bull. I remember Wally talking about how John Bull was a hard trail but I did not imagine that every foot of the trail had rocks. When we got to the beginning of the trail and I looked up I remember saying to myself OH BOY! Where is Clint, Wally and JJ I'm going to need them but with everone helping out we made it out ok. Ted's winch saved the day cause when he got high centered no one was in front of him to strap him over and his winch did the job. On this trail there is no bypasses. My next KJ upgrade- a winch. Can't wait to do this run with the rest of the club. Lots of work but well worth it and lots of fun!!

Yes you are right wheeling with Ted and his 40+ years of experience under his belt one should not worry about getting in trouble.

I would like to add, that this was a Non Sanctioned run. Not a KJ West run.

With a Non Sanctioned run, all you need is someone who is not afraid of body damage, and some good friend to help stack rocks, and to drag you over those rocks.

With that being said, LET'S DO IT AGIAN!!!! Who is next? What does anyone know about Dishpan Springs? 3N34. It looks like there are a lot of rocks up there.

This trail was JUST reopened this Memorial Day weekend after a long time of being closed. The bridge was the problem, and the entrance and exit from it. The Dirt Devils made an Adopt A Trail run last weekend to remove fallen trees, etc., so it should be in pretty good shape now.

I ran it a few months ago on patrol to see if anyone was using it illegally (they were) and it was quite rough in a couple of spots above the springs, one in particular. Suggest only vehicles with both diffs having TADs.

I'm so confused. I've been in Long Beach on a location shoot, with no internet for the past 2 weeks. All I know is 8:30 at the Discovery Center. Sunday right?

For some reason I have Holcome creek on the brain.
