| Post subject: | Finding a good independent Jeep shop in Socal? |
Anyone know of any sources/have any recommendations on a good independent Jeep shop in Socal? Would like to find a recommended place to take our '02 Liberty for some emissions-related work. I'm sure if I go to the dealer for this it will be a total rape job. Would like to find a good independent I can count on for things. Found a great place in LA (although I live in San Diego) for the wife's Saab--hope to do the same with the Jeep. |

I'm been down in San Diego almost a year and have not had to look for anything like emissions, What exactly are you looking to fix/have done? All J's is like an 1.5 hours away. Thier are some others from SD here hopefully they can help more. |

All J's is like an 1.5 hours away. Thier are some others from SD here hopefully they can help more. I have a check engine light on and a code that says I have a "gross" leak in my evaporative emissions system. Probably just a hose with a hole in it (but who knows) but I understand they may have to smoke out the leak. I'm sure the dealer's policy would be "let's replace everything". Just don't have money to waste on this at the moment. Need to get this fixed as fairly and cleanly as possible. |

Maybe the dealer has seen this problem before, and would know right where to look, where as an independent shop, who deals with only parts of a lot of trucks/car would have to search to find the problem. Just a thought. Or did someone steal your gas cap? |

I thought the emissions controls were covered by a 100K mile warranty? Do you have over 100K miles yet? Hmmmm....maybe it was 50K? Have you had your gas cap checked out? Maybe just toss a new one on there and see if it fixes it. BTW< ALL J's is the company that makes Boulder Bars and the SUper Skid among other cool stuff for our KJ's. You can see there banner ad at the top of the forum. BOULDERBARS.COM I don't think they get into Jeep emission control systems though. |

Well if you want to try a dealer then I had my first couple of oil changes done at Rancho Jeep, and they also changed both my cracked fog lights under warranty, I have seen one other lifted KJ their getting stuff done but not sure what was being done. They have modded Rubi for sale on the lot, so they are willing to work with lifted vehecles. Worth a try to see if they can isolate it first. |

Well, the dealer says that no, of course, *this* particular emissions work/parts are not warrantied (I've had several emissions issues in several vehicles and have yet to have anything that's been covered under any policy). Dealer's quoting $300-$500 on this. Anyway, if the dealer is where most of you take your Jeeps (that's surprising to me) then I guess that's where I'll go. |

Sorry to hear about that, have you tried calling any local shops? Just to see what they have to say. |

Unfortunately, taking it to the dealer is often the only option as there are not many local shops that specialize in Jeeps, especially when it comes to new car emissions problems. I think there is still a "Jeep" shop here in my town that specializes but I am not sure. I will run a search to see. |

Hey guess what I know what it is. Crawl under you KJ from the back. look up above the rear axle in front of the gas tank. You will see a little black box about the size of a motorcyle battery. It will have a black hose or two coming out of it and a couple of wires too. I would almost bet a million bucks that the hose with the curve in it is broken, or leaking where it plugs into the evap system. Go buy a new hose (around $20.00 dealer only item) and have a nice day. If this is not it there is a check valve in front of your battery under the hood that has a hose on it. It is a black and blue valve with a plug and wires and a hose on it. The hose runs back to the evap box by the gas tank. Check this but these dont go bad to often. After that the gas cap would have to be missing in order to get that code. Really easy fix, keep the hose job money that the dealer want's to fix the problem and go wheelin w/ the money you saved. PM me if you have any questions, I have the entire tech manual in PDF format from Chrysler, Ill send it to you. |
