Dare County Bombing Range. Suposedly it stays open on Sundays and you can go wheel in there. Great mud pics from what I have seen.

I don't think so. I spent 26 years in Naval Aviation and wheeling on a bombing range just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Ahh come on now!! Lol When I was stationed in Utah I took aircrew out to do some combat search and rescue training down in the range there and let me tell you bout some nice wheelin!. Granted it is a range and you see lots of "stuff" all over the place but use common sense. It was on a dry lake bed and I actually got a 4 door f350 stuck up to the axles out there. They had to come pic us up on quads and come back the next day with a snow cat to pull it out!!! Fun stuff but I kinda got in some trouble over that one since I was off the "approved" roadways there. As for the bombimg range Richard mentioned, I am sure that if they open it to the public, there isn't anything "harmful" there so I think it sounds like a plan!!!!

The last time I looked it was still an active bomb range. Even if it is closed to bombing and open to the "public".......

it is the Marine Corps Patrol road around the area, and I have been on it (illegally) in a Marine Corps HMVEE. We eventually got pulled out by a deuce and a half... To say this would swallow you whole is an understatement... :)

It was ugly, swampy, buggy, and there were WAY too many critters without shoulders in there!

Count me in!

I just emailed the office about when we could ride there. Lets see what they say. As far as how far away it is:

We gotta drive down 158 South just after you get into the OBX. You gotta follow 158 till it turns into US-264/64. 11 Miles past that, you turn left on US-264 and follow that for 8-11 miles to the range.

This is not on the OBX, it is on the "mainland"...so to speak.

So, it would be a Sunday thing?

We would definitely have to take Friday and possibly Monday off of work.
Some people would have Monday off.

We do it on Columbus Day weekend.
The last weekend the campsites are open.

It's usually the first week of October.

First week of October?!? No way. I'm going back way before that :) My kids are dying to soak their feet in the (warm) salty water ... I'm thinking of going back during the summer.

As far as I know, most of the beaches are closed at that point for OHV.
