Once upon a time, I darn near drowned in a kayak. I was in a pool. I do good in most other forms of floating objects, boats, canoes... But sheesh, kayaks want to kill me. |

There is a new(er) class of recreational kayaks: sit-on-tops. These are extremely stable. If you happen to flip, you would just fall off and the kayak will upright itself. Would you consider trying again? There are a lot of opportunities for exploring with kayaks in the Carolinas. I am thinking this would give me another venue for spending time with my son doing outdoor activities, considering that the ocean is a significant drive away

Oh, there are so many vehicles running around the Triangle with kayaks on top, it's almost funny. Plenty of places around here to but in. Funny little fact Daniel (RedWolf) and I have birthdates that are very close to each other. Under the Zodiac symbol for balance, yet we both can't do kayaks. Go figure. |

Growing up in Thailand where traveling by boat is a common mode of transportation, I have had some exposure to paddling I would say they (the boats I was paddling) were closer to canoe than kayak, though. Also, having read how "stable" the SOTs are, I expect to have no problem personally. However, my little monkey is another story ...

Man, someone needs to get Dean laid. Where on earth he pulled that factoid from is way beyond me... But it is kinda funny nonetheless... Bill, one good thing about Turbo & Nitro is that you could just stick them in front with a lifevest and a rope and say "Tow daddy ashore!"

Never tried kayaking, but we have been canoeing several times on the New River up near West Jefferson NC. We have used Zaloo's Canoes and had a good time. Beautiful scenery, right near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Zaloo's has a good staff to help you out. If anyone is interested, we will probably make a trip up there this summer. |

Wow, I can't believe I missed this thread when it was more recent. I LOVE kayaking. We own three SOT kayaks and one canoe and have access to multiple others. Normally, we kayak on the Chesapeake Bay (2/3 mile from our house), but you can also spot us paddling on one of the other Bays (Back Bay, Redhead Bay, etc.), one of the Sounds (Currituck, Pamlico, etc.), or one of the sixty-two thousand inlet waterways here in VA Beach. Some say they've also spotted us on Crystal Lake (Ocracoke) with a bottle of champagne and two plastic wine glasses, but I'm not admitting to anything...

Next summer we'll have to make a one weekend kayak / off-road trip to Ocracoke. I'd love to paddle the sound side, calm waters and all. |

Sounds sweet. Let's do it. My wife and I hit Ocracoke at least once a year for our week long retreat. But we're always up for a weekend trip too. Paddling on the sound side we'll just have to fight through all the paracute surfers (or whatever you call those things). Used to be wind-surfers, now it's all parachute surfers. Let me know if you're ever up this way. We paddle every chance we get. Usually, we're on the Chesapeake Bay with the dolphins since we live so close to it. But we love exploring all the waterways around here. Can't find a hill to drive me Jeep up, but MAN do we have water to play in!!! |

haha yah its called kite-boarding, the kite costs about 1000-2000 bucks, and its hardd work, and even harder to learn. Me nd my uncle have been doin it for a few years. we head over to va beach alot so mayb thats close. you need to drive on down to uwharrie with us for some wheelin too! |

Kite boarding! That's it. I couldn't remember the name. Thanks. Doesn't look like a kite, so I can't remember the name. Go figure. We have three kayaks, so I'm sure we could bring one or two extras when we do a wheeling/paddling weekend. How did you break your kayak? They do rent kayaks in Ocracoke. The place on the main corner (which is referred to as Kayak Corner by the locals) rents kayaks. It's called called Ride The Wind. But I'm not sure if they let you rack them up and take them elsewhere, or if it's just for paddling around Crystal Lake. I'm wanting to do Uwharrie this year. I'm trying to squeeze it in. Do they close for the winter? Or can we go in Jan/Feb too? |

i went over the falls onto a rock... cracked it. idk if uwharrie closes 4 winter though |
