Post subject:  Uwharrie - Labor Day weekend

All,

Good morning. This is my first time posting in this section but have been a member for a while. My wife and I are planning to spend the weekend (Labor Day) camping and wheelin' in Uwharrie. This will be the first time I have REALLY played with the Liberty in the dirt ('06 Sport CRD + lift and stuff). Anyone want to join us?

Dirty,

Sounds great! Have you been on these trails before? Which ones? Does your KJ seem to do well? As mentioned above, I have not really wheeled the KJ - had a TJ back in the day that saw many trails (lived in Pittsburgh then).

The trails on URE are most certainly doable in stock KJ's *except* Kodiak rock. Even there (Kodiak) you have lines that can be done safely in lifted KJ's --- just don't take the one that Mutt did (he broke his Al's upper A-arm on the more aggressive line). :D

There are issues with wheeling the KJ. Mostly you just have to keep the bouncing in front to minimum if you can, because that aluminum front diff tends to grenade from gaining sudden traction. I was on a trail where San Diego Dave blew his front diff on a nondescript hill precisely because of this.

So that leaves Buckaroo Banzai'ing through sand dunes out, but rocks still in :-)r

Here are some pictures from Holcomb creek in Big Bear. Holcomb is rated just slightly below the "John Bull" (most difficult) trail in Big Bear, and the KJ does fine.

But then every now and then you relax, whatever, and this happens:

the same unassuming rock claims another victim

That was the same trail (Cleghorn) that claimed my bumper for a long time (cracked it coming down on a rock).

What's your plan? We can do one-day run on Sunday but there are places I might have to take it easy because I took out my gas tank skid plate. I've only been to Uwharrie once before, so I'm not real familiar with the obstacles but I don't remember hitting any skids last time I was there. I might remember enough of the trails to get around, but would much rather have a nice trail map --- it's around here somewhere.

There might be one guy from work coming along in his own YJ.

That makes three of us.

I'm having an infarction!

I have too many obligations this weekend to get away or I would be ALL over this one.

damnit.

for the trailmap check out http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation ... ie_off.htm

I never had a gas tank skid on my Lib, and rode URE a lot. The trails there change a lot throughout the year, and at this time of the year, with as dry and rough as it has been, you can expect to find some real boulders out there.

It will be a lot of fun, for sure!

Thanks for the map, Daniel. What kinds of obligations that you can't get out of? :)

I don't think I will be able to make it. Too much stuff going on this week.
