Chiming in late...

Mebane is a good area, Burlington fine. The reason we were confused is that North Carolina is not the Left Coast. Think back to your rural GA days, it's more like that than LA. Burlington and surrounding areas are all going to be very safe compared to say, car jackings and home invasions.

If you want to try and give us a list of amenties you are looking for we might be able to help point you in a better direction, but without knowing what you are looking for, we can simply say the whole area is generally safe and nice.

Bring up moving to Durham and you will get a different answer of course...

Carport or garage is a plus not requirement

And along the same lines as moving can anyone tell me how good or bad there cell reception gets around this area

I have AT&T and get pretty good coverage. I think I used to not get any bars in Uwharrie, but now I get 1 or 2. :D That's what you were asking right? How was cell coverage when you are off roading? 'Cause we aren't that backward.

Bell South == AT&T
Plenty of coverage around the state.

As for renting a townhouse in the Burlington area. You will probably have better luck trying to find a house to rent.

You might want to head up a little north, closer to Mt. Airy (Mayberry). It's probably more populated than Wilkesboro and will offer better opportunity for getting work and renting a place.

Or, you might want to get closer to Hickory.

However, finding a place to rent out where you are looking will be difficult. But, I'll say, if you wanted to be isolated, you are headed in the right direction.
