Welp, my transmission looks to be going in for a major repair. A month or so ago, I took the Liberty in for an oil change and the shop recommended a transmission fluid change. Apparently that didn't go well, because the transmission started revving high and not shifting up to the final gear. After a little back and forth and taking it over to the dealership, the dealership service put some detergent in to hopefully clean out a sticking solenoid. So, after a few weeks, it still hasn't fixed it and now it is getting worse. I dropped it off this morning and just got the news.

$519 for the part
$1050 total (parts and service)

The part might take a week to come in. I have to pre-pay for the part.

Ugh.
I didn't plan on getting rid of the Liberty, just getting a new commuter car. It has 135k miles on it.
So, I guess I'll just be holding off a new car purchase for another three months after the end of the year.

thats the part about autos i hate, always vulnerable right after a fluid change as the pump re-primes

the only abnormality that mine has done in the last 40k is on two occasions, it seemed to get stuck between 1st and 2nd gear while coasting, and when i went to re accelerate it appeared to be in neither but when i backed off the gas it shifted

its gettin time for me to pay dan a visit and get a slush change

what 'part' did they end up sayin it was?

Wouldn't cost a bunch more than that to order a new/refurb and install it our dang selves, is it a 42 or a 45??

He said solenoid, I don't have the part number in front of me.

Yeah, transmission, not something I want to mess around with myself.

Apparently it might take 3 weeks or more for the part to come in.

give dan a call at (919) 577-1055 and get him to reference that part and the labor involved and see what his figure is, seems awful high just for the selenoid, although i know they can be pricey

may be one of those things where you can save 300 bucks by ordering it yourself at the least

If you can figure the part number out, I can check the dealers around here and see if they have it in stock to save you some time.

Why would you take a transmission out, repair one item, and not the entire assembly? You have 135000 miles on those clutches, the pump, etc. Or is someone rebuilding your transmission for $1100?

Dean and I have never seen eye to eye, so I think that's why he's more comfortable sending his transmission to the dealership than to a reputable independant transmission repai shop that is also a Jeep guy...

Hopefully it's all done and finished by now, but I can tell you that I have never had to wait 3 weeks for a part...

Daniel,
It isn't that we don't see eye to eye, it is more that the Liberty is my daily driver and it wouldn't save me any money if I had to rent a car of days while you repaired it.

It is getting repaired today. If my transportation needs were more flexible, then I wouldn't mind dropping it off with you.
