well.. we did tent camping at Ocracoke national campground.. it was the best.. you are not near many tourists like you would be on Hatteras.. its just across a free ferry ride to Ocracoke.. the campground is about 1-2miles out of the town so you are in national park area.. nothing but dunes and beach.. when we went in July one year.. there were about 10 campers.. we had the beach to ourselves.. was awesome.. we had a tent site right on this side of the dunes so the waves were hitting 20ft away.. was so cool.. there is no hot water showers but who needs hot water on the beach :)

Ocracoke is a GREAT camping area! What a blast! Talk about having a place to yourself. I thought I was on Gilligan's island! We should make a big LOST camping trip out there this year!

For the 3rd Annual OBX run in October, we are thinking of starting in Ocracoke and driving up on the beaches back towards Hatteras.

For last year's OBX run, I camped at Ocean Waves Campground in Waves, NC. It is a smaller campground, but was decent. It seemed that most of the people there were staying for long term since it was mostly larger tow behind campers and RV's. Besides myself, there was only one other tent. Most of the tent sites are right behind the dune line. There was one under some trees near the front of the campground as well. I would recommend it.

Also, when I was growing up, my family and I would stay at Hatteras Sands Campground in Hatteras Village. It has alot of campsites. We also stayed at Cape Woods Campground in Buxton. It was ok. I would recommend either Ocean Waves or Hatteras Sands.
