The extreme south end of the island south of corolla, bodie lighthouse area before the bridge, is part of hatteras nat. seashore and they're charging by the week or year for permits to drive on the hatteras seashore now, pretty ridiculous

there are several area's between bodie lighthouse and corolla that allow orv access certain times of the year, this time of the year being one of them - but it varies from location to location so you'll need to check the signs and what not or simply ask at a gas station close to the beach access to get current and local information. IMO, spend as much time up at corolla as possible - it's access is free and generally the only traffic you have to deal with up that way is the people that live on corolla. A month or so ago when I was at corolla i saw several dozens of wild horses so good luck seeing them, they seem to chill out further towards the sound side during the day and come out to the ocean side closer to dark.
