Here, here! I'm another Rochester KJ'er. Howdy! I'd be interested in some trails myself, if anyone knows of some.

Try googling "Croghan Tract" and see what you come up with. It's North of Utica so North East of you and a VERY LARGE area on the western side of the Adirondaks. You can camp there and it's free the last I knew. Probably a good long haul for you but worth it if you go up there for a week. Good place for a camping/fishing/off road vacation. It is near the town of Croghan NY. The Ranger's # is 315-346-1040 or 314-376-3521 the last I knew. Havn't been up there in a looooong time.

yes................there is also the Moose River Plains area up by Wakely Mountain. NY State owned also. It is up by Indian Lake. About 100 miles Northwest of where I am. Free access/camping/fishing/off roading. Miles and miles of dirt roads with 2 tracks going off of it to ponds and to the Moose River. You need to fill your gas tank and make sure you got everything you need before you go in. Only 1 gas station in Indian Lake. Once you are up there you are miles from pavement. This one is closer to you but still a long haul. A good place to spend a week or weekend. Campsites are like 100 yards apart. Very primitive........no services........just you and the mosquetos (sp?)and black flies.....deer, bear and moose and every once in a while a cougar sighting (big debate on that but I think they are there up in the mountains - in small numbers). There are mountain springs with running potable water and they are marked. Other than that no services. An absolutely beautiful mountain setting.

Man I have not been to Moose River or Indian Lake in a few years. It is BEAUTIFUL country up there. You could get L.O.S.T un and the Adirondack's is a great place to loose your self from life for a few days.
I would love to plan a spring/summer weekend trip this year.

I am game. I could work around your schedule since I am a lot closer to the place.

I think it would be a cool thing to have the NE guys do a weekend thing for the spring summer.

Dave, you live up there and should know more of the area then I do. It has been a while from the last time I was there.

Lets see what happends. I know it is a long time from now, but may work out better for people to get notice.

I am going to Indian Lake on 9-20-09. How close is it to the camp ground?

There are camp grounds all over. You can drive up to the lake and drop your camp gear pretty much were you want.
Usally if you see an open dirt trail, You will find good camp grounds.

This is close to Indian Lake and not clearly indicated on maps. No one up there will probably give directions. No diesel pumps in Indian Lake I don't think and it is waaaay in the boonies so you will have to tank up in Warrensburg probably. You will need to be totally self sufficient if you are staying in the mountains. Miles and miles from any services.

I won't post directions on the open forum. PM me if interested and I will give you my cell# if you want to meet me somewhere. I am always up for a 4wd ride.

^^I am game, Andrew.

Mapquest the Village of Indian Lake and see how far that is for you. The best place is near there. No directions, I would have to show you the place. You wouldn't find it anyway by yourself. You can stay there for the weekend but it is miles from anything so you need to be totally self-sufficient.

You have my cell# if you want to talk. Call after 7pm any evening.
