They opened the outer beach today and the sun was a shining. Testing the lift out on the sand for the first time.

if you talking about the 4x4 fish permit, the one you put on the dash board, that one doesnt work. you have get the outer beach permit.

Suffolk Outer Beach + Green key= $93+$35
NYS 4x4 fish permit= $65
Camp Hero =$40
South Hampton $250 for non res?
East Hampton $250 for non res?

I use the 4x4 fish permit, its good enough for a handful of beaches and also the cheapest.

Like CRD guy says, it's a bit costly for the permit but you can access several beaches on the east end. And it's a nice drive through the dunes out to the inlet about 6 miles one way. The downside is the outer beach isn't always open due to erosion. Next year I want to get the state permit too, but there is a limited window to purchase it.
And it most likely was me since I run that road all the time.

Great! I will definitely pick on up next year and then maybe we can all get a LOST beach run in the works for the spring or summer. This 4x4 permit is one that goes on the dash? Is it a sticker or a card?

I'd be down for a LOST beach run. I would even take my nikon to take some nice pictures.

The permit is a card that you only put on the dash board and you cant laminate it, the permit is 65 bucks. Let me know if you guys or anyone from LI/NY is up for getting the permits. When the time comes ill put up a thread as a reminder or maybe we can all set a date, time, and meet there.

We can even do some fishing when we get out there, you just have to make sure you have your mariners salt water fishing license.

I'm getting mine early in the year. And I might even get the East Hampton one because I'm in Montauk quite often.
I would definitely like to meet up with everyone, even to just BS about our Jeeps. All we have on the Island are beaches, no real trails. But we can get a convoy upstate if we're serious.

I think the East Hampton permit is $250. For that price you could buy the Suffolk County permit and the state fishing permit and have access to quite a few beaches on the east end.
I know of a few dirt roads that run through the pine barrens out east on LI where there are some serious mud puddles or rather lakes. I went back a few weeks ago after a good soaking and got stuck real good. 4LO got
me out of that situation thankfully as I was solo and quite a walk back to the highway. Next day had the diffs drained and refilled as there was some mucky water in there. I guess I learn the hard way. But if anyone is down for a run sometime. I'd be game.

Yeah, it is a little pricey, but I like to go out there with the family and we build bonfires on the beach and hang out at night, and it would be great not to have to carry all that crap (firewood, chairs, coolers, etc) and just kind of 'tailgate'. And it would also be go to be able to go to different beaches and and park in the different towns. But I should start with the Suffolk County one, since it is a lot closer. And we can meet up, so when we do get stuck, we're not alone, lol.

With the fishing permit, do you have to be actively fishing and have all the necessary equipment? Like some of the other ones.

I also plan on changing my differentials on Sunday.. they're not that hard right? Any special tools?

Dean,

you need a shovel a jack board a fishing rod (i got mind from walmart 40bucks fishing rod and a small tackle box with stuff in it) a strap or a snatch strap and a toilet. I got a small camping toilet from dicks sporting goods.
http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/produ ... Id=2427108.

You need all this stuff just in case you get stopped by the parks police. They will fine you if you dont have this stuff.

Tire deflaters are a big PLUS and you should get an air compressor from pepboys in case you want to go out to a beach that doesnt have an air station.
I have a 12V one that i connect to the Libertys battery, its a lot faster then the ones you plug into the lighter

Oh ok, so it is still technically a fishing permit.. That's easy enough, and I would bring a shovel and jack board anyway.

Deflators are the next thing.. I have a "better quality" 12v cigarette lighter air pump.

So I guess we have a little crew for next year, lol.

With the fishing permit you are technically supposed to be actively fishing. So you gotta stick the pole in the sand and set it out if you are going to park. I know at smith point they don't really check out all the gear though you are required to carry it at all times. If you do get stuck and need assistance from a park officer you may get into some trouble if you are without the required gear.
The 12v cigarette compressors usually overheat before you can properly inflate the tires in my experience. I went with the MV 50 and it has been stellar. Just got to hook it up to the battery, but is very fast to inflate those BFGs. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.html/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/192-5518909-3093134?a=B000BM8RT8
Psyched to get out on the sand with you guys next year.

LI_KJ The dirty roads your talking about, are they on the Pine barrens Preserve? Im trying to scope them out on google earth and how deep was the water the last time you went there?

The trails I went down were not part of the Preserve proper. They are in Manorville, and run for quite a distance through the Manorville hills. Some puddles were very deep, 20" or more. The one I got stuck in, was just to the door seal with my unlifted sagging Liberty. I got a little muddy water inside that leached through the door seal on the pass side.
There is always some one back there and it runs adjacent to some county park land and private hunting club land. There are a few hunters parking spots that can be accessed off the road. Nothing too crazy in terms of wheeling other than the small lakes that dot the road.

Not to beat a dead horse here, but we should get a meet and greet going to get our state outer beach 4x4 fishing permits now that the new year is upon us. I would be down to meet up at the Robert Moses field office, get the permits, and see if we can't 'go fishing' someplace. I just renewed the Suffolk county outer beach permit at the beginning of the new year.
Took another quick drive out to the inlet and Cut 3. I wish more of us NE guys could get the county permit, and get a winter run down the beach. But I think you need to be a county resident and have the green key card. I don't think there is a non resident permit, but not 100% sure of that?
More beach posing in January!

Took a ride this weekend with my brother down Smith Point to the inlet and back on Burma road and we happened upon this little guy sunning himself on the shoreline.

Had a little free time today after changing the transfercase and front diff fluids today and the outer beach at Smith Point was open. Not a soul out there! All to myself, and heres some pics.
Thanks to LIBBA we still have some access on the county beaches. The original road washes out during the winter storms and high tides. Through LIBBA's action we are able to continue to fish and wheel on the county beaches. New entrance to Burma Road.

These two guys kept me company.

Not a soul out on the outer beachfront!

current setup! Need to get some upgrades goin'...IF YA KNOW WHAT I"M SAYN'!

Way cold for fishing! I lasted about 30 mins, the sun set and I was out of there. Great day to be out...
