Ok so finally after going to 4 auto parts stores i picked up Mobil synthetic 75w 90 rear diff gear oil that ill be using for the gear oil change this week. If your planning on doing yours and you stop by an auto parts store that has them, BUY IT! Mobil 1 75w 90 gear oil is hard to fine.... Went to one pepboys , 2 auto zone stores, and 1 napa. Took me a week to find a place that had the last one i needed and i was starting to get frustrated... :banghead:

While im under there i also plan on extending all my breathers. The rear diff, front diff, and trans breather. Now if im not mistaken the breather lines are 5/16s? If not some one correct me if im wrong.

Well since I wasnt able to get the gasket I ordered for the diff cover (not going to use the RTV crap) because the office was closed when I got home I decided to power wash the engine bay and the undercarriage of the KJ. I thought to myself since I'll be under there turning wrenches I may as well give her a good cleaning and not worry about all the crap falling on me from the last trail run.

Hopefully I'll be able to make it home on time to get the gasket from the office tomorrow and have time to change the oil.
As of right now, I await for her to dry with a can of PB blaster in my hand :twisted:

So I guess your doing the diffs tomorrow then? Upgrading the rear diff cover? I've been looking into them. I just added another upper rear iso to my rig today. New PCV valve and a few other maintenance projects. Fun day of solo wrenching. I wanna do my diff and xfer case real soon! Lemme know how it goes there....

Got it done! The entire project took 1 hour 1/2. It would have taken less if I didnt take any pictures. so here goes!

Tools that were used.

Here is a picture of the gasket I decided to use instead of the RTV.

I untightened the screws and used a flat head screw driver to pry open the pan.

Cover off and the oil drained.

Some type of slug on the bottom of the diff case. Probably all the shavings from the 60k of driving.

Got the scrapper out to remove the old RTV from the housing.

Cleaning all the shaving off the magnet.

Clean Diff cover.

Gasket on diff cover, holes aline perfectly.

So here came the problem. The gasket kept moving around when I was trying to bolt the cover back on so I decided to use some old RTV i had laying around to hold it in place.

whooallaaa, no hands!

Put the cover back on and tightened as instructed. I made sure to use lots of paper towels for when the oil starts coming out.

While I was under there wrenching away I decided to look at my next mod. Can you guess? :rockon:

And finally the "tramp stamp"

Next I'll be doing the transfer case.

Nice Pete! I like the tools picture the best, nicely displayed of course with Corona and cigs. (is there a lime in that Corona too?!)
Great little write up, as I need to do this too. Just hit 60K and need to get all those fluids changed out. I gotta do my xfer case too. Maybe I can make the next sesh.

Holy crappola.
I thought Mobil 1 75w 90 was hard to fine but the 80w 90 is the same. Went to pepboys and autozone and couldnt find the stuff and the only place that had it was auto aid and Napa. On the way to Napa I stopped by to auto aid and noticed they had the 80w 90 oil weight I needed made my Castrol. I walk into the place and ask one of the sales guys where I can find diff gear oil. He walks me over to where they are and points to the Castrol 80w 90. BUT I noticed that on the bottle it said: Ideal for motor cycles, ATVs, and scooters. So I asked him if this was the right one for the front diff of a Jeep liberty and he said yes as long as its the same weight its fine. So I thanked him and walked away. I just didnt find it nornal for a front diff from a jeep liberty would take the same thing as motor cycles, ATVs, and scooters... :shock:

I could be wrong but better safe then sorry!

Drove down the block and stopped at Napa and got me 2 valvoline 80w 90. Oh yea I also looked around for the transfer case gear oil and found it no where... I guess that's something I'll have to pick up at the dealer... :furious:

If anyone knows where I can get me some trans gear oil, hook a bratha up.

Will be doing the front diff, breathers, and my try to make the seal of our doors with the cut/split water proof this week.

Got every thing done today. Changed the front diff oil and trans case oil and also did the breathers except for the trans case. Had some complications that will soon be taken cared of thanks to some info given to me by tjkj. I was finally able to find ATF+4 for the trans case and believe it or not from all the places, I found it at an auto parts store in "da Bronx"... yea all the way out in the bronx. The breathers I was able to only do the rear and front. I extended the rear all the way up to the fuel filler neck and the front diff is now extended and is at the battery height

took off the engine skid leaving the radiator skid attached. Notice the plastic cover on it? I'm very surprised i didnt find any beach sand or rocks under it when it took the plastic cover off. OH WELL its not going back on!

engine skid with out the plastic cover in it. In case anyone is wondering what that oil is from, its from some good ol PB blaster :BANANA:

removing the filler screw. Had to think for a few moments to figure out a way to remove. You'll see why in the up coming pictures.

As you can see, the drain plug uses an allen wrench but the filler uses some thing else that I didn't have soo....

I decided to use so ratchet socket extension.

The fitting was prefect, no play at all when I was removing it.

Had to get a small pump to fill it up, I got away with out one for the rear but there is barely any space on the front.

and that was that, I didnt take anymore pictures because my small camera decided to throw a doo doo fit on me (card reader error) and there was no way in hell that I would be taking my nikon out for this and getting it all greased up.

After a few times of wheeling and seeing how stretched the brake line gets I decided to come up with my own brake line extension. Last thing I want is a broken brake line on a trail or on the beach. Pictures to come when the weather gets better.

I got out the dremel and did some modification of a 3" metal L-Bracket, a little spray paint and mounted it up. Still gotta do the axle line though.
Have you done the transfer case drain? What size allen wrench is that BTW?

Jeff the transfer case allen size is a 10mm and the torque specs are 15-25 ft torque. Make sure you undo the fill plug first. The last thing you want is to drain the T-case first and find out that the fill plug is seized :shock:

. It took some man muscule to take those bolts out. I also put some Teflon tape around the drain and fill plugs just to be safe. Here's a picture of the bolts the trans case with the Teflon tape.

Finally got a chance do to what I wanted to do on the KJ.

I got some LTT leveling spacers for the back because I was getting annoyed every time I would look at the KJ and noticed the back being lower.

Looks like you removed that rear sway bar. Any difference in the stability? Howsrhe feel with those spacers in? I would think it would be a bit more stiffer feeling than the soft rubber of the isolaters. Looking good as usual.

Man, That's what I need to do.. I have had the extra rear isolaters sitting in a box in my room forever! I hate the rear end sitting lower..

I have to figure out my CV first.. Sunday it should be changed..

Oh and your brake line bracket looks MUCH nicer than mine, hah.

Well I went to the city and back last night and barely noticed any difference in ride confert with the spacer and stability from not having the sway bar. I can't way to take the kj out to see how much more flex ill be able to get with out the sway.
You know what they say flexible people don't get bent out of shape!
Jeff next time we meet the coffee is on me. Am at sts tires getting my second alignment and will be posting up the charts from the first time alignmented after the lift and this one. 1 more hour to go!

I finally got around to relocating the brake line. Used a 2" L bracket and some metal bending. A little rustoleum, and whamo=lowered brake line.

Pete, Jeff, how much lower is your brake line sitting from the stock location? Both of your setups appear to be lower than mine.
