Hey y'all. So ever since I swapped out my CV been having boot troubles. Looking to swap the boot if possible, but if not will replace the whole unit. What I need is a driveway to lay under the jeep to fix this thing. I'm available saturday morning if anyone has driveway to spare. Otherwise I gotta go out to exit 68 on the LIE to do this. Lemme know if any of our fellow LI LOST crew wants to jeepgeekout with me!

Oooo, sounds like fun!
I wish I could be of some help. But unfortunately I'm none.. I have no driveway, and no time this weekend.

Are you going with the Mopar boots? They are really the best (read; thickest).

Crap! I have to work Saturday morning now. Might have to wait the following weekend. Hmmm. I wanna tear this thing apart already! Bought an air hammer to help things get off easier. Thanks for the offers.

saw this way too late. I had a bunch of other crap going on today, so I would not have been able to make it out that ways...
In the meantime I had a rear passenger window regulator crap out on me, so that was a lot of fun! :banghead:
Thats fixed, but the boot is still spewing its grease, slowly albeit.

I'm down, no work for once. Also I might want to do a bit more clevis lift on mine, but that's not too hard, just annoying hence why I'm putting it off.

Sorry Pete! I just had to get er done before the weather got too cold to be sitting on the ground crawling under the Jeep.
I thought giving myself 7 hours to get the axle out and new one in would be enough time, but as usual it's always something when working on these Jeeps!
I frantically had to give a call to my mechanic friend, then Dean for some support and necessary advice, and to rethink how to go about this! I had everything apart, but could not for the life of me get the LBJ to release from the lower control arm. It was seriously pissing me off that once again a stuck part was preventing me from getting this job done. With the light fading and it getting chillier out, Deans call let me step away from the problem, get a BIGGER F@#*ING HAMMER and two wacks and it was apart. The rest of the job went smoothly, no torn boots this time around and viola! A new Mopar CV axle under the heap, so far so good, and I put about 200 miles on the thing. Only time will tell...
Image
Thanks to Dean for being available via phone and helping me get through this crap alone! Next time a partner would help immensely! (will I ever learn?) :ALONE:
Now for some :5SHOTS:
and then some more :JEEPIN:
-Jeff

Just did mine Saturday with a local guy who has garage, air tools and much more experience than me.
This is probably my 4th replacement due to boot wearing and opening up.
The smaller end of boot is folded over the clamp on inside joint and I am worriesd its gonna cause wear, thinking of taking off factory clamp and pulling boot a little lower on axle so that it is no longer folded on itself.
Any thoughts?
I am located in Howell and never really used this local section before.
I'll be happy if I can get a year out of tghis one.
Time to bring back the core.

Welcome!
This is what mine looked like.

You should definitely relieve some pressure in the boot. You can use a flathead screw driver under the boot at the clamp to let some air out of the boot. It should help a bit.

Thanks,
Mine looks very similar. Are you worried about the way the last pleet is folded over the lower clamp?

Yes, sorry, What I meant to say was this is what it looked like - Before I fixed it.
Even after a couple of (hundred) miles it was already making an indentation in the boot.

You need to use a flathead screwdriver to pry the clamp away from the axle a bit to let some air out of the boot. It should then sit normally.
