Subj: RE: Robert Moses Entire Beachfront Off-road Area Closed
The vehicle access along the Oceanfront at Robert Moses State Park will be closed effective Tuesday morning 5/29/2012 in anticipation of the piping plover eggs hatching in the nest near the golf course. The reason for the closure is to prevent a “take” of newly hatched chicks as occurred in 2010. While we considered some sort of controlled drive-by in the area of the nest, such a plan is not workable. Within a day of hatching the chicks begin foraging and the nest site is abandoned as the piping plover family seeks out food. Our hope is that the family moves west as their foraging continues. We will monitor their activity so that we can re-open the area as soon as possible. During this closure, the bayside drive will be open for fishing access.
