Post subject:  Sleeping in a KJ?

Hello,

Has anyone slept in their KJ? I am off on a hunting trip next month and want to pack light. We are going on a 35 mile off-road 5 day trip and don't want to put up, and break down a tent for five days. I am 6'1 and know with the seats down there is 69 inches of room. I am thinking that with an air mattress and sleeping sideways I *should* get along fairly well. Only bummer about the Liberty are the seats don't fold down completely.

Thanks!

That's my kind of a "tent!" Awesome thanks so much for the suggestion! It's on order and it will be here for my September 16th departure date!

Thanks,

Larry, are you a NorCaler? I don't recognize your handle.

I am in NorCal. I just signed up today. Stumbled across this site while looking for some 4wd trail information in the Tahoe area. I am also into Mt.Biking and was looking at some McKinney Trail information for 4wd, and Mt. Biking.

Great nor cal kj site, and great forum!

Post subject:  KJ sleeping HURTS

Larry,
I dont think you would be comfortable sleeping in the KJ. I am 6 foot and I have to sleep corner to corner, it hurts. That and I have leather seats that dont get used much and the back rest doesnt lay flat. My suggestion to you would be set up your air mattress and lie in the KJ for an hour or so. You could make this a good hiding place for naps

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the info. I ordered this: http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates ... stid=18924
Thanks to lilmatty suggestion, but received an email last night saying they will not have any in until after September. I was really hoping to avoid the whole tent thing, setting it up and breaking it down twice a day for 5 days isn't really fun. Sleeping under the stars is an option, but it's at 5,000 and 7,500 feet which T-Strom's can roll in at anytime.

Bummer!! Perhaps I'll try out the air mattress before going. I can function on two hours of sleep for a few days in a row, but not ideal.

Thanks again!

I was going to comment on what some people consider packing light?! To me, that cot and all it's aluminium frame is a friggin load of bricks.

Larry, have yuou checked out bivy's or solo tents / shelter's? Check out THIS. Any one - two pole shelter / tent will be quick & easy to set up / take down.

As a climber & sea kayaker, I have to pack light. I could send you to where i got mine, but you'd think I was nuts as far as cost. I assume your looking for something cheap, lightweight and somewhat quality made so check out the website link above. If you need any further tips or suggestions, I'd be happy to help.

If you go onto e-bay there a few of the travel cots including some from stores if you feel uneasy buying from an individual. Free shipping on some too. Might be worth checking out.

I tested out the air mattress last night. Glad I did before leaving on my trip! I *thought* there would be more room - not a chance! Looks like I need to dust-off that tent....

Good thing you were smart enough to do a test run first.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the link.... My dealership has one setup in their showroom. It's HUGE!!

And Clint, I remember when those first come out. My luck-I would roll right out of it. Really cool though...

This post is probably dead, but I thought I would ask anyway. Does anyone know of a tent setup like Clint's that either is just like his or is run out from the tailgate for some extra room (the tailgate would be opened and there would be a board setup for extra room). My girlfriend and I have tried sleeping in the KJ many times, she does alright because she is 5'8" and I do really bad because I am 6'2" Help... :D

I believe Clint got his from Mario at Adventure Trailers. The only tent I can think of for the tailgate is the way that's just a regular tent with a side that opens to the tailgate. Can't think of anything that exists just to extend it for leg room. Are you feeling crafty? Sawhorse and plywood?

Try these:
http://www.autohomeus.com/
http://www.oasis-tents.com/
http://www.hannibalusa.com/

The Adventure Trailers that I've seen so far used the Overland tent from AutoHome. That seems to be one of the best options out there so far, although I hear that something new should be out in early 2006 from a another vendor. The Oasis tents are the least expensive, but someone told me that the ones he'd seen seemed kinda flimsy, thought they'd be a problem in a windy spot.

Jeep makes a tent that attaches to to rear of the KJ. If you go back to the first page of this thread I posted a link to someone selling one in the classified section.
