Yep, you're NorCal! Welcome to the place. MountainMike is up there in Union City also so you're not alone. The legal places I know of near you are Hollister Hills and Frank Raines park. Hollister might be better if you're newer to off roading since they have more clearly marked trails and an obstacle course/testing ground kind of area. There's some places the fellas go up by Sacramento-ish also. Keep your eyes open and chances are good a run will pop up that you could jump in on.

head north until you get to the redwoods, then turn on any logging road you find...good times for all!!!

You will need to get north of Ukiah, so be ready to make a weekend of it.

Welcome Stampey and Brigrat. you should introduce yourselves to the rest of us here in NorCal.

I recommend Cow Mountain just east of Ukiah. There a re ton of trails and not one of them challenge a lift and armored KJ but there are some real 'confidence builder' obstacles. There's also a cool obstacle course to try out things with. If you want to hit it let me know when and I might be able to show you around.

We ran over to Knoxville a few months back and it way very tame. Not much fun. Frank Raines, we need to try again as we were rained out and on last visit. Need to wait until the weather cools though as it's hotter'n stink in those hills west of Patterson.

Let your NorCal brethren know if we can help you.
