I will be starting a new job in Hollister next month. Initially I'll be looking to rent, but need advice on preferred areas. There doesn't seem to be much in Hollister so I'd like to solicit advice in which other communities (Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Salinas, etc) you Bay Area types would recommend. Things to consider are commute traffic into Hollister, local mountain and road-biking scene, community amenities, etc.

thanks,

-jim

Dunno about home prices or rents, but Gilroy and Morgan Hill have orchards being turned into housing tracts.

The biggest bike club is Almaden in San Jose: ACTC

The tallest road ride is up to the observatory, the Mt. Hamilton Challenge: Ham

Mountain biking: kick butt Coe and less kick butt Grant

For the KJ: Hollister Hills SVRA

"Other bike" event: Hollister Bike Run

Famous local thing: For garlic ice cream Gilroy Garlic Festival

You couldn't pay me to live in Salinas. All of the places you listed are close enough to go to when you need there when you need to. If you really want to live there, I'd look for somewhere on the South side, or off Reservation/River Road like Las Palmas.

Gilroy gets incredibly hot with a garlic aroma, it's really been built up in the last couple years. Get air conditioning. Easy drive to Hollister.

Morgan Hill, little further for a smaller town. They have a Home Depot, Mervyn's and a Mushroom Festival. I think that's all there is there. You'd be leaving town anytime you wanted to do something neat.

I'm in Watsonville which is over the little mountain from Gilroy, it's a decent town but just a two lane highway to get to Hollister. Sucks if there's one slow truck or an accident.

The further North, the more traffic. For quality of live and commute, I'd look into Gilroy. Good luck and you gotta tell us what you end up with.

Thanks guys for the tips. I did indeed settle into a nice brand new apartment community in Gilroy. It seems to best meet the criteria of being close to work, good road and mountain biking (Coe), low (relatively) cost of housing, close to shopping (outlets galore) and close to Hollister ORV Park.

It's good to be back on the west coast!

Now that I'm somewhat settled in, it's time to start arranging for alternate transportation for late July-Aug when the KJ gets an SFA conversion....

I look forward to wheeling with the Nor-Cal folks!

Welcome then. If you post Hollister run dates, a few KJ's should show. If KJ's show for that, maybe a few more will show for runs in the Sierra and other NorCal. Good luck with the SFA. Sure woulda liked more than 31 inch tires Saturday at Fordyce and Signal Peak.

Glad you'll be settled down.

Who's going to be doing the SFA?

All J will be doing the SFA conversion in late July. I just confirmed with Heather we have a 23 July drop-off date.....so now I need to arrange for alternate transportation.

Thanks Nanette -- really kind of you to offer -- but I'm seeking a sporty convertible to take full advantage of this great California weather and twisty roads to the coast.

Twisty roads and Jeeps aren't the best of friends.

So when do you actually move?

I'm already moved in. Got the keys to my new place here in Gilroy on 3 June. Still waiting for furniture and such, so it's not quite what I'd call "home" yet.

When are they actually starting that project? Did they give you a finish time frame? :?

Not sure if the drop-off date = start date or if there's some lag in there. As far as finish date, that's a little vague at this point, but they indicated it could take up to two months.

Quinn and I are supposed to talk this week to sort out the hardare details. I plan on running 33's initially. I don't want to exceed 6 inches of lift to keep the CG from gettin too high. If I can find a custom body shop to open up the wheel wells and fabricate new flares, then I'll look at 35's.
