Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,

Forest Service to Host Summer Field Trips for Travel Management

I just talked to Jim Winfrey, Land Management Planner on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. He was letting me know about seven upcoming public field trips the Forest Service is hosting during the next few weeks.

This series of field trips will concentrate on looking at roads and trails, as well as discussing resource issues and recreational travel needs as part of the ongoing Travel Management scoping process initiated back in January.

I have pasted the information from Jim below. If you need additional information, contact Tom Montoya, Mountain City Ranger District, at 775-738-5171 or Gar Abbas, Ruby Mountains Ranger District, at 775-752-3357.

JUST REMEMBER, PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IS CRUCIAL TO KEEP RECREATION AREAS OPEN, PLEASE GET INVOLVED!

Thanks in advance for your support,

Forest Service to Host Summer Field Trips for Travel Management

Elko, Nevada...The Mountain City, and Jarbidge & Ruby Mountains District Rangers announced today that they are planning six consecutive Saturday field trips, and are open to scheduling some additional field trips during the week if requested. This series of field trips will concentrate on looking at roads and trails and discussing resource issues and public recreational travel needs as part of the ongoing Travel Management scoping process initiated back in January.

"I am hoping that Elko County residents will consider taking time out of their hectic summer schedules to visit some of their favorite off-highway vehicle areas with us," said Tom Montoya, Mountain City District Ranger. Montoya said that field trip conversations provide a great opportunity to learn more about the current Travel Management process, and all sides of the issues and concerns involved with designation of a travel management system.

"We want to be as flexible with our scheduling as possible in order to gain valuable input from the public on specific routes or concerns," said Jarbidge and Ruby Mountains District Ranger Gar Abbas. "We have scheduled six Saturdays in June and July and designated a general geographic area to focus on each day. Specific routes and sites to be visited on these days will be determined after the public has called in to sign up and expressed their particular interests."

One seasonal topic that may arise on these trips and that we would like to address is a concern that was discussed in Wednesday's commissioners meeting. The topic was closed roads and fire access. Elko County residents should know that the 2005 Travel Management Rule allows firefighters to travel on any road or cross country to respond to wildfires on the National Forest. The exception is Congressionally designated wilderness areas, which requires prior approval.

The public needs to know that the Forest Service will continue to suppress all human-caused wildfires to protect firefighters and provide for public safety. Fire emergencies allow agencies the use of a full complement of equipment and aircraft to manage the fire, including helicopters, fire engines, dozers, or retardant planes. The Forest Service and our inter-agency partners will work to keep wildfire away from structures and communities - using whatever equipment is available and necessary to get the job done.

WHEN & WHERE THE FIELD TRIPS WILL OCCUR. Logistics have been determined for some field trips, while details for others are being finalized in the weeks ahead. If you are interested in a field trip that does not have a time and location, then participants need to contact the Elko Forest Service Office at 775-738-5171, and specify the location. Participants will be put on a contact list and will be notified the week prior to the field trip on any logistics for those various field trips.

June 6 South Ruby's

June 13 South Independence Range

June 20 NO FIELD TRIP - postponed due to area's Motorcycle Jamboree, June 14-20

June 27 Bull Run area, Mountain City Ranger District

July 11 North Ruby's/East Humboldts

July 18 Bear Creek Summit area - Mountain City & Jarbidge Ranger Districts

July 25 Eastern Jarbidge area

FIELD TRIP LOGISTICS. Signing up for field trips requires the following: Participants need to call ahead to indicate if they would like to view specific routes/areas, and will need to provide their own transportation and field gear. Make sure that your vehicle is fully fueled prior to heading out on the field trip(s).

WHAT TO BRING. Since the trips can last up to eight hours, participants will need to be adequately prepared for a full day outdoors. Suggested items to bring include:

Water, lunch, and snacks for the day's outing;
Hat, sunglasses, lip balm, and sun block;
Comfortable clothing; dressing in layers is always a good idea;
Mosquito repellent;
Old cushion or mat to sit on for lunch break; and,
Any other items that you normally bring along when you are out for the day in the woods.
To learn more about this release, please contact Mountain City District Ranger Tom Montoya at 775-738-5171, or Jarbidge & Ruby Mountains District Ranger Gar Abbas at 775-752-3357. Sounds like fun. Elko is a good 4 hours from Reno on I80. Those are the same mountains I hunt in. Some of the most beautiful in the state.
