We lent a hand at the
Operation Turkey today, and the kids went with us too. Basically we donated old clothes, helped sort through the clothes, and carried take-out boxes of turkey dinner and water to hand them to homeless people throughout Austin. We delivered around the William Cannon area, and downtown, around 5/6/7 streets.
I believe the sponsors donated over 100 turkeys yesterday, and they were cooked at the Bikinis Sports Bar & Grill up north, and today the volunteers packed them all in carry-out boxes. When we arrived at the Soup Peddler at 1st/Mary, the entire lot was full of volunteers of all ages, clothes, and other donated items. There were a LOT of volunteers and the organizers probably didn't count on as many showing up as they did. A lot of us were milling around wondering what to do (next year we'll do better job of organizing this event). But, by noon, when I stopped by the lot again, everybody was gone and the lot was as good as new, so we did get everything out on the streets, hopefully.
If you guys have time to spare next year, please try and volunteer to feed the homeless just for one day of the year. I know it doesn't come close to solving the problem, but if you could make a difference for one day a year it is worthwhile (and blankets last for a while
)
