Hey y'all! I'm looking for at least one other person (Jeep) (passengers would be welcome too) to travel with me to explore the 4x4 roads in the Big Bend Area (Big Bend NP and Big Bend Ranch State Park). Assuming my leave in April-ish (I'm not sure when they will give it to me until December/Janurary) doesn't match up with my wife's schedule (she won't let me go if we're both off {I promised her California or a cruise}), I want to attempt this trip. We would spend about 4 days camping :CAMPING: in the primitive campsites, packing in and out all of our supplies :ALONE: . This would be the closest thing to over-landing I have done. Would anybody interested? Again I would need a minimum of one other Jeep (for safety) and the more the better.

Here's some info about the BBRST's 4x4 roads to make y'all drool. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_bk_p4501_0152k.pdf

It will depend on the exact dates, but I have been wanting to wheel/camp in Big Bend for a while.

I'll let you know as soon as I get my dates. I was thinking of posting this in the NM forum also. Maybe I will after I get my dates and I can be more confident I can make this happen.

I might be interested over landing/expedition type trips are my favorite. I wonder how safe it is since it is on the border.

It wouldn't be that bad. There s a lot of desert between the big bend area and any major mexican or American city. Too far for a lot of crime. That said BBNP warns that there is some small crime on the river. But I think with at least 2 vehicles we'd be ok. I also plan on being armed with at minimum a 40 cal pistol.

Here's what I'm thinking as a schedule. The camp sites are guestamites (not sure how far we will actually make it each day). I have also set taken into account time to do the Window Hike, Marisco Mine, Santa Elana Canyon, Terlingua, and were ever else we decide. total is about 4 full days of exploring. With Camping Mon-Fri in primitive campgrounds.

Provided I get good news back from the Dr. on Tuesday I will be off April 26-May 4. I was thinking of meeting Monday night the 28th at the campsite at BBNP and heading home that Friday or Saturday. How does that sound to y'all.

So if we do this trip I'm going to have to make it back home by Thursday night. I need to spend some time with the Mrs. and reset so I can volunteer at the Wheelers for the wounded event on that following Saturday. If I arrive Monday night, that would leave all of Tuesday and Wednesday to explore the back roads. We would most likely stay with in the National Park the whole time.
This is good since there should be a lot less pin striping in the Ntl. Park (The state park is notorious for it).
Do we still have interest in this trip if we only 2 full days of exploring? OF course that's when I'll head home feel free to stay as long as you want.

Ok I think I'm going to call this off. Maybe next year. I realized its right before the LOST Moab trip and my club had an event going on both of the weekends adjacent to this one which I'd like to go to. If anybody made plans for this trip let me know and we'll still do it.

I was still trying to decide on this trip or Colorado in July. So next year I would still be interested in heading down to Texas. You are welcomed to join us in Colorado this summer if you are interested.

Next year will work better for me too. Hopefully we can get it together. Big Bend has been on my to do list for a long time.

I did Big Bend for 2013 Spring Break , it was a good trip. I did not have a lift but did get new Cooper AT3s the week before the trip and they did great, never had to put it in 4lo...

You are on the border and "they" do come over. But I never felt afraid or anything, they know and keep distance. They come over and leave cans for cash and leave small trinkets and stuff with a can so you dont have to actually interact with them. They have watchers and usually a horse, when the border patrol shows up they just calmly walk into the river and there is nothing BP can do. I was with my wife and kids and never was worried. I will say that the River Road would be less likely to see them as its way more spread out, but that is where I would be more worried if you did come across the wrong ones nobody would know...With that being said, I did drive it and spent the night on a primitive site out there. Closest camper to ya is a couple miles away so its nice and quiet. Its mainly washboard roads with dry creek beds to cross now and again. Lots of hiking trails

Note the park is the size of Rhode Island...its huge and would take a good week to see all of it. Hope you guys make it out there at some point.
