What year escort? Those things run forever...

'97 with 119k. It runs just fine! I'm just sick of it and its the "super stripped down economy version" with power nothing. And its green, which isnt a problem, but the ENTIRE interior is the exact same color of green as the outside... FUGLY!

Dude...with gas prices the way they are...I'd kill to get my hands on something like that!!!

I'm sure she's ugly but saving you a fortune.

I drive 45min to and from work per day, and I drive the 'scort almost every day. So, yeah, saves me some dough. It gets almost double the fuel economy of the Jeep...

Good thing I saved up all that money from the gas so I can spend it on my differential!!

I guess the only explanation there is...everything happens for a reason!!

I drive 30 mins. one way to school and this Jeep is KILLING ME...

I love it to death but it's just down right horrible on gas...I have to find another cheap DD because I can't continue spending as much money on fuel each week as I do. But whatever...

Good luck with the install and get some pics! I couldn't wait to drive mine again after it had been sitting for 2 weeks.

i have a question:

when i tow the kj on the dolly, obviously the tranny needs to be in neutral. does the t-case need to be in neutral as well?

If your using a two wheel dolly, I think just tranny in nuetral. The tcase nuetral is if your towing it on all 4 wheels.

It couldn't hurt to put both in N, but those with command trac don't have tcase Nuetral

Man... thats another lie the salesman told me!

Ya makes sense, so Trany N disconnects the Engine from tranny, Tcase N disconnects tcase gears from driveshafts? That would mean that you could just put tcase in N to tow, right? leave trany in park? I gotta go experiment...

I think I'd just put them both in N

Read your manual to be sure. I think, (don't quote me) that with the transfer case in Neutral, that the trans is supposed to be in park.

Just got home and checked my manual chapter 5 page 287 and 288, This is confusing, they seem to indicate that towing with a two wheel dolly might cause txfer case damage, but I think you might cause more damage if you don't put the front end on a dolly and something locks up in the diff on the way.

---------------------------------------------------------------
RECREATIONAL TOWING (BEHIND MOTORHOME, ETC.)
Towing – 2WD Models
Recreational towing is not allowed. Towing with the rear wheels on the ground can result in severe transmission damage.
Towing — 4WD Models

CAUTION!
Internal damage to the transfer case will occur if a front or rear wheel lift is used when recreational towing.

NOTE: The transfer case must be shifted into N (Neutral), and the transmission must be shifted into P (Park)
(for automatic transmission) or into any forward gear (for manual transmission) for recreational towing.
Shifting Into Neutral (N) Use the following procedure to prepare your vehicle for
recreational towing.

CAUTION!
It is necessary to follow these steps to be certain that the transfer case is fully in N (Neutral) before
recreational towing to prevent damage to internal parts.
1. Depress brake pedal.
2. Shift transmission into N (Neutral).
3. Shift transfer case lever into N (Neutral).
4. Start engine.
5. Shift automatic transmission into D (Drive) or manual transmission into any forward gear.
6. Release brake pedal and ensure that there is no vehicle movement.
7. Shut the engine OFF and place the ignition key into the unlocked OFF position.
8. Shift automatic transmission into P (Park) or ensure manual transmission is in any forward gear.
9. Apply parking brake.
10. Attach vehicle to the tow vehicle with tow bar.
11. Release parking brake.

CAUTION!
Transmission damage may occur if the automatic transmission is shifted into P (Park) with the transfer
case in N (Neutral) and the engine running. With the transfer case in N (Neutral) ensure that the engine is
OFF prior to shifting the transmission into P (Park)
(refer to steps 7 – 8 above).

Shifting Out Of Neutral (N)
Use the following procedure to prepare your vehicle for normal usage.
1. Shift transmission into N (Neutral).
2. Turn engine off.
3. Shift transfer case lever to desired position.
4. Shift automatic transmission into P (Park).

I pulled Fastrx KJ from Badlands to Valpariaso Indiana, about 120 miles on a two wheel dolly after he broke his diff. Same issue, we didn't think it was a good idea to have the drive shaft spinning with a damaged diff housing. I don't believe he suffered any damage to the tcase from the tow. I think he put both in N for towing, but we hooked it up so fast I don't remember exactly.

I didn't look in the owners manual for normal towing protocol, but I'd be surprised if a flat bed was always required. Anyone get a tow before? Did they have to call in a flatbed?

Mine was towed on a dolly from Wellsville to Grafton, about 135 miles, with the transfer case in Neutral and the Transmission in Park with no ill effects. That was over 2 yrs. ago, and to date, no transfer case problems.

On pg. 257 of the owners manual it does state:
Internal damage to the transfer case will occur if a front or rear wheel lift is used when recreational towing.

However, on page 259 it states in the warning box:
The transfer case N (Neutral) position disengages both the front and rear driveshafts from the powertrain.

So, how is damage to the transfer case supposed to occur if the driveshafts are disengaged from the powertrain?

This is an interesting read. Please let us know what you find out with regard to towing a 4x4 on a dolly.

Good luck, jerbacher. I'm glad Tom is able to help you out. L.O.S.T. folks are some good people!

Jon, posted directions on towing with a dolly on the general site , its what I found on various RV sites that were talking about towing a Jeep Liberty on a dolly with a RV . Had to work the Cyber Cafe (our agency has computers set up for people to use that are at our conference) at the Housing Conference today so put my time in there to good use! I think

thanks for all the advice guys. after reading all this, it looks like even though the manual says that you'll damage the t-case, there have been plenty of successful dolly trips with libertys. so, im not gonna worry about it. strap it up and go!

Yup. Also I would like to note that the chunk that was shown in a previous thread is only one thing that happened to his diff. the top also cracked so basically if the cover wasn't attached it would have been in 2 pieces.

All done! A great big thanks to everyone who helped out on this. That includes everyone on the Wellsville run for helping me get out of there and get home, everyone who gave advice and knowledge since then, and a big thanks to Sean and Tom for spending a whole saturday laying under my Jeep! :D

techincally speaking I broke the socket as I was pushing down. I say we blame the dealership for possibly cross threading it and then using an impact wrench on it.
