Is there any chance someone without skids could make it without ripping the oil filter off of their CRD?

Even if I had to take every bypass I would still enjoy getting out and watching everyone else play.

Should I risk it?

The only problem with bypasses.. Sometimes there isnt any.. haha. You would want at least the stock skids and some rocker rails..

It might be a little tough being stock and having no skids. However, you are more than welcome to ride along in my Jeep.

Which should be way fun, because Eddo almost always takes point, so he doesn't have anyones angles to follow!

Also, my brother opted out. Something about in-laws... :(

It would be worth a trip to just see what is out there and enjoy the company. Even if you did not want to risk damage to your own rig, there is more then enough spots for people to go along. I know I will also be going back to this area in the summer as well. The total cost ends up being more then Badlands as the 4 hours travel time cuts into the gas cost but the experience is far better.

I have been to most of the areas down there before, just not in the Liberty. So I pretty much know what to expect as far as rocks etc. go. Of course always before was not in my daily driver.

It's doable with a lift and no skids if you took the bypasses and took it slow. I only hit by skids once or twice and that was taking some of the more difficult lines. With careful spoting and taking the easy lines I think you would be fine.

Just being stock height and no skids is going to be rough. Even then it would be doable, just take forever.

With the oil filter on the CRD where it is I think I had better at least get a tranny skid. Still dont know for sure if I could make it but, if I can get a skid slapped on there I will try.

I waited till I had bumper, a lift, tires, and skids before I ever took the Libby wheeling, and then on my first outing I dented the lower rocker pannel and tore off a plastic trim stip where the rock bars should have been.

There's no way you can have to much protection, and hindsight doesn't help after the damage is already done.

Besides, a stocker will just hold up the modified group at every obstacle in order for you to find a way around it, or get draged through, or over it.

When we wheel with stockers and first timers, two experienced guys with modified Jeeps and winches go with the stockers on easier trails (a leader and a tail gunner) and the rest of the modified go in their own group and do the rougher trails.

Not trying to slam you for being stock, just the realities of wheeling, which most of you modified experienced wheelers will agree.

True, but half of my fun is spotting people, and stockers provide much more... challenge, to avoid damage. :)

Oh, you would just have a blast with me then

I havnt been out "wheelin" since I had my samurai in college, and that was mostly just some powerline trails and mud...nothing technical at all. So I would need some good guidance.

And the CRD is as stock as they come, didnt even have tow hooks when I got it. Looks like everyone else going is lifted, some locked, and all armored? The only thing I would have going for me would be ESP, diesel power, and beginners luck!

I will let you all know. Maybe, if nothing else, I can just do a ride along and have you guys teach me some spotting/driving skills.

If you are going to go stock, I recommend skids for sure. If you are lifted you could probably get away without them if you take the bypass and easy lines.

Spotting, recovery, and challenging obstacles is half the fun. Otherwise might as well drive on the highway.

Either way it would be great to have new people along. I got a free seat in my Jeep. I know others do too.

I'd join you folks if this were closer, but getting away overnight over a holiday weekend isn't going to happen for me. I do want to shoot some footage at The Chute that I've heard so much about. Maybe next time.

I'll see if my wife will let me take the camcorder and get some action shots...

I plan on driving over for just that day (my wife said the same thing about doing an overnight over the holiday). It is a 4 hour drive from my house on the SE side of Indy but it would be more from Westfield. It is also just about one tank of gas. So that is a tank there and a tank back. I plan on fueling up the night before and have everything packed except the cooler. I will get up at about 4:45am to leave at 5am. That will give an arrival time of about 9am. We left last time at about that time. Last trip I got home shortly have midnight (I think) but we did stop for dinner which I really enjoyed. We were able to share stories and talk with others who enjoy whelling our kjs. As we were leaving, we even found another guy in a lifted kj who was shocked when he saw 5 lifted kjs outside the bbq place. I wont lie, it does make for a long day but I honestly never had more fun in my jeep.

It will get darker alittle sooner then last trip but unlike the Badlands, we are not bound to a clock so much. I would like to try to get to the second half of that trail though. I am really starting to get excited! With some luck, this recent warming trend will continue and we will not have to deal with the rain we had last trip. I will also bring my hunting orange just in case the game warden is laying around.

Last time we hit the trail at 10. That's why I put down 9, even though I makes it an hour earlier...

Also, someone asked about moving it a day, which would make it Sunday - New Year's Eve. I said I'd ask...

I can do either but would prefer Sat for multiple reasons. I would more then likely go either day.
