Went out scouting yesterday and found BIG mud. Mapquest McArthur, OH. Zoom in once. Click on intersection of OH-677 & US-50. Just east of the intersection is Twp. Hwy 8, going to Twp Hwy 7. Twp Hwy 7 goes back into logging land owned by Mead Paper (Elk Springs Public Hunting). Right before a 4" steel swinging bar gate on a left turn upward incline is a small jeep track into the bush. That is the start of the jeep'n area. HIGHLY recomend more than 2 jeeps, lifts, mud tires, etc. I'm not going back until I get some muddies and some friends (and then I'll drag arse until I lift).

The fun part of this scout was towing the TJ that had killed itself in the mud back to their camp site off of US-50...

Got to be careful where you go when close to any Mead property, they lease some of it out to people and they do not take kindly to having people driving through their land. Of course a lot of people do it, lets just say I have first hand knowledge of what can happen! There have been a couple of cases of where people have been shot at, one I know of was on a dirt bike and no where for him to hide! There are a lot of roads down in that area to go on, some township roads that will make some hard core 4 wheelers turn green but watch out for the redencks and the peolpe that shall we say grow their own... crops and do not like to be visited!
Not trying to kill you fun just a little warning. I lived in Jackson / Vinton county area for a while. Was Executive Director of a Community Action Agency and meet the very best people and some of the very worst in that area. I can tell you roads to go on that makes the river on Deliverence look tame. And the same people live on both! Really though there are some good folks there. If you ever go there again let me know I can make some phone calls.

I used to cruise around the area you all are talking about when I had a samurai. Its no joke, there are some places I have gotten into that I wish I never had. Kind of a bad deal when you drive by a place and everyone stares at you like they havnt seen another automobile in two months, shotgun on the porch, car hood, in the truck window...then you realize its a dead end road!!! Freaky.

Just make sure you go with someone that knows the area. I will say I have met some of the nicest people around there. Then there were the ones I am glad I didnt meet.

It really not that bad just need to be aware of the possibilities. I feel safer driving around there than I do driving through Drexel. If you do go out that way be sure to check out the Hocking Hills area there should be a few trails to hit out that way too.

Yes I guess I was not saying DO NOT go and I for one feel safer in that area than here in Toledo at times. Of course I grew up in Southeastern Ohio so know how the people can be at times. But I also know that you have to respect their land and even land that surrounds theirs. There is a lot of land that people own but live out of the area for jobs etc so the guy down the road watches after the place for them. Just like the land I own down that way, I have went out to check fences and found gates left open, fences cut etc so people could go 4 wheel on my land. And yes I have shot at them after 2 bullets hit my place during Deer season, but back to the subject at hand. Just respect the area and ask people along the road if where you are going is a trail or just up into some farmers field. Remember Tread lightly. The road back into my place has taken almost 90 ton of rocks in the past year just from people going where they should not be and tearing things up. OK I am done ranting!

This conversation reminds me of the time during a family vacation -- when I'd only had the KJ for two weeks --- when I took the wrong exit near Cincinnati. Or was it just inside KY? Anyway, we got off highway seeing these industrial parks figuring all these employees eat lunch somewhere. Well, the "main road" I was on drove through some warehouses and then toward the woods. As soon as we rounded that corner and hit the shade of the trees, the road plunged steeply down hill and became gravel. Caught me off guard, like a hill on a roller coaster. Anyway, the only house around before the road dead-ended looked like a Hurrican Katrina had hit it. There was junk all over the yard and a big sign spray painted on the side saying, "Turn around $10." The place looked like the Firely family house in House of 1,000 Corpses. I wasn't gonna pay anyone to turn around, but I also didn't want my wife or toddler daughter getting shot at. Backing up wasn't an option because, well, you can't see the top of a hill that steep. So, I stopped cold, drove into the grass for a 3-point turn, and spun my Wrangler ST racing slicks all the way up that steep dirt road. Maybe my imagination got the best of me, but I was picturing scenes from Race with the Devil in my mind as I got the helloutta there. I'm such a wuss.
